Mike Amiri did not start with a collection. He began in Los Angeles by hand-crafting stage pieces for L.A. performers, and in 2014 the label debuted with a capsule at the LA concept store Maxfield. That backstage beginning explains a lot of what makes Amiri look the way it does: clothes with a little stage in them. The house is known for denim and for thrashed skinny jeans in particular, but the tops are where the attitude is easiest to try. The Green Oversized Heavy Flannel Shirt and the Black & White Oversized Flannel Shirt are the Americana ones, to be worn open over a tee or tied at the waist. The Heart T-shirt, the Graphic-print T-shirt, the Gray Embroidered Cropped T-Shirt and the Logo-embroidered tank top are the simple graphics. For sportier days, the Logo-Embroidered Colorblocked Polo Top, the Collegiate Cotton Polo Shirt and the Cropped velour hoodie have a campus feel, and the Cutout leather top is the night-out piece. The MA sweater and the MA zipped top are the quieter layers.

The sneakers are the best place to understand the house. Amiri makes them like dress shoes, in leather, suede or Italian cotton canvas, and you can see the care in the shapes. The Pacific flat sneakers, the Off-White Lizard Pacific Flat Sneakers and the Lizard-Embossed Leather Pacific Bones Sneakers are the low, clean silhouette, while the Stars Low-Top Leather Sneakers, the Stars Court Low sneakers and the Glitter Stars Court sneakers add the brand's star motif. The MA Quad Cotton Low-Top Sneakers show the canvas side, and the MA-1 Mesh & Leather Chunky Sneakers and the Leather Logo Platform Sneakers give you some height. For reptile texture, the Python-Embossed Leather Low-Top Sneakers and the Brown Printed Python Skel Top Low Sneakers are the loudest. The 40MM Western-Style Leather Ankle Boots finish the group. If you like a flat suede sneaker, the worn-in retro runner has other options, and a worn-in white leather sneaker is a close cousin in spirit. What I would skip is wearing the python or glitter pairs with a printed pant, since the shoe is already the pattern.

Denim sits at the heart of the brand, and the Whiskered Tapered Jeans are the cleanest way in. The rest of the bottoms are softer. The MA Side Stripe Straight-Leg Drawstring Track Pants, the Black 'AMIRI Lasso' Track Pants and the Striped sweatshorts are for days when you want to be comfortable, and the MA leggings are the slimmest option. The High-rise wide-leg cargo pants bring more volume, and the Mini Skirt and the Script Rib Knit Mini Skirt are for the nights. A rule that works: if the top half is oversized, keep the bottom narrow. A flannel with the leggings or the tapered jeans is the balanced version of the look. The bags are small, and they carry the personality. The Python embossed nano vanity bag, the Brown Python Nano MA Bag and the Brown Python MA Bowling Bag all lean on that reptile surface. For the Western influence, the Black Fringe Micro Honey Bag and the Brown Suede Fringe Honey 40 Shoulder Bag add movement. The Micro MA bag and the Logo-embroidered camera bag are more compact, and the Full canvas MA cotton cap is the one accessory in the group. The last group shows the house in a softer, dressier light. The Double-breasted bouclé blazer and the Denim track jacket are the layers, and the Micro MA Pochette is the small bag to take out for the evening. Wear the blazer over the ribbed-knit dress and flat sneakers for a mix of polished and relaxed. The denim track jacket is the easier choice for a daytime errand, and it sits well over the velvet knit polo dress. I would begin with the Whiskered Tapered Jeans, a flannel shirt and a pair of Pacific sneakers. Amiri first showed in Paris in 2018 and opened a Rodeo Drive flagship in 2020, and today Mike Amiri remains chief creative officer while Adrian Ward-Rees has been CEO since 2023. Still, the heart of it is that early idea of clothes with a bit of stage in them.
