Aveeno takes its name from Avena sativa, the common oat, and it has been building gentle routines around that grain since 1945. Here are the Aveeno lotions and creams I keep within reach, the soothing body lotions that pair with them, and the mild washes that come first.
Aveeno, From a Bath of Oats in 1945 to the Body Care I Still Trust

Aveeno is a name people say without thinking about where it comes from. It comes from Avena sativa, the common oat, and the company was founded in 1945 by two brothers, Albert and Sidney Musher, working with the Mayo Clinic. Their first product was a Soothing Bath Treatment, which is such a lovely, modest place to begin. In 1961 the company became Aveeno Pharmaceuticals, and in 1999 Johnson & Johnson bought it and redesigned the bottle.
I find that history reassuring. The brand was never trying to be a spectacle. It began with a grain and a bathtub, and the range still reads like that: practical, mild and a little bit old-fashioned in the best way.
There are four products in the first grid, and I use each for something different. Daily Moisturizing Lotion, Fragrance Free, is the everyday one, the bottle you can put on after a shower without a second thought. Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion is the one to pick if your skin is tight and needs a richer layer. The Eczema Therapy Daily Soothing Body Cream is a thicker, soothing cream for dry skin, and it is the one I would keep by the bed. Calm + Restore Oat Gel Moisturizer is the lightest, a cool gel that feels good on a warm, tired face on a summer evening.
If I had to build a first week from these four, I would put the fragrance-free lotion on right after the shower, the cream on hands and elbows at night, and the gel on the days my face feels hot. Nothing here is loud, and that is exactly why I keep coming back to it, week after week.

Body lotions that soothe and sink in
Oats are the tone of the shelf, but I like to add a few softer, prettier things beside them. These are the body lotions I mix in when I want more scent, more slip, or a bit more glow.
Nécessaire's Body Lotion in Olibanum has peptides and niacinamide, and a resinous, calm smell that suits a bedroom. Glossier's Daily Perfecting Nourishing Lotion is the lighter lotion here, for days when you want something simple. Kiehl's Crème de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter is exactly what the name says, thick and airy, the one I use on shins in January.
Salt & Stone's Saffron & Cedar Body Cream is a warm-smelling cream that feels rich but spreads easily. 54 Thrones' Barrier Repair Cloud Body Cream, with peptides and hyaluronic acid, is the soft, cloud-like one. Cyklar's Sacred Santal Nutrient-Rich Body Cream, with niacinamide, is the richest scent in the grid to my nose, warm and sandalwood-like, and the one for dinner nights.
A practical tip is to keep two bottles going: a plain one for daily use and a scented one for evenings. That way your skin gets the same simple base most of the week, and you still get to enjoy the pretty ones on purpose.

Washes that leave skin comfortable
A calm routine starts with the wash. If the cleanser is harsh, no lotion will make up for it, so I keep these mild and quick. Rinse, do not scrub, and use water that is warm and not hot.
Nécessaire's fragrance-free Body Wash is a barrier cleanse with niacinamide, ceramides and hyaluronic acid, and the simplest place to begin. Josie Maran's Golden Hour is an argan body wash that is hydrating as it cleanses, in a refillable bottle. Glossier's Nourishing Daily Oil Wash is an oil wash, and it is the one for a dry winter shower. Salt & Stone's Saffron & Cedar body wash carries the same warm scent as the cream in the last grid, so the two make an easy pair.
Youth To The People's Supershroom Calm Cleanser has adaptogens, snow mushroom and oat oil lipids, and it leans gentle and soothing. Tower 28 Beauty's SOS Rescue + Relief Body Wash Treatment is a rescue-and-relief wash, and it is the one I reach for when my skin feels tired.
What I would skip: very hot water, loofahs on tender skin, and any wash with a strong scent when your skin is already upset. If your skin keeps itching or looks inflamed, that is a question for a doctor, not for the shelf.

The routine I would actually keep
Here is the routine I would keep. A mild wash in a short shower, patting dry, and a lotion on within a few minutes, while skin is still a little damp. Use a light lotion on the days that feel fine and a thicker cream when your skin is asking for it.
Stay with the same handful of products for two or three weeks before you decide, and add only one new thing at a time. That is the boring secret, and it is why oat-based care has lasted so long. It is meant to be used every day, quietly, for a long time.
If a patch of skin has not calmed down after a couple of weeks, do not keep adding products to it. Show it to a doctor, and bring the list of what you have been using so they can see the full picture.
