Ay Que Calor

Ay Que Calor

Ay Que Calor is a Colombian resortwear label designed by Maygel Coronel, who was born in Cartagena in 1987 and studied fashion in Bogotá, Cartagena and at the Accademia della Moda in Naples. It sits alongside her eponymous label and the pieces are handmade locally in Colombia.

Swim

Swim is the core of it: triangle tops with adjustable halter and side ties, ruched strapless shapes, and a lycra with memory-shape construction meant to hold across body types. Coronel learned to sew as a child from her mother, also a designer. The fit engineering is the family trait.

Tops and shirting

Coronel trained at Arturo Tejada Cano in Bogotá, at the María Luisa Valencia school in Cartagena, and then in Naples, which is an unusually long formal education for a swim designer. She launched her own namesake label in Cartagena in 2017. Ay Que Calor is the second name she designs under.

Skirts

The pieces are described as locally handmade in Colombia, in keeping with the Cartagena base. Beyond that the paper trail for this specific label is thin: no documented founding year, no first-collection date, no collaborations. It is represented by the Tomorrow showroom, which is how it reaches international retail.

Dresses

The dresses and sets are built for the same journey as the swim, which is beach to dinner without a change of clothes. That transitional logic is the signature of Coronel's main line too, in body-contouring lycra. Whether the two labels share a workshop is not something the brand has made public.

More from the collection

One clarification worth making: the celebrity list attached to Coronel, including Dua Lipa, Jennifer Lopez and Hailey Bieber, belongs to her namesake brand rather than to this one. Ay Que Calor has no verified red-carpet history of its own. The designer is the through-line, not the fame.

Our honest take

Buy this for the swim, where the fabric and fit engineering justify the attention. The cover-ups are pleasant and less remarkable. If you already wear Maygel Coronel, you are buying the same designer's hand at a different address.
