Benefit Brow Palette: What Actually Works

Benefit Brow Palette: What Actually Works

A brow palette does three jobs: fill, shape and set. Here is how to get each one right, whether you use a palette or a few single products that do the same work.

The short answer

If you came here for a Benefit brow palette, it helps to think about what a palette actually does. It gives you a powder to fill, something waxier to shape and define, and usually a way to set it all. You can get the same result from single products, and for a lot of people that is easier. Benefit's own Precisely, My Brow pencil and Gimme Brow+ gel cover most of it, and Anastasia's Brow Powder Duo is the closest thing here to the palette experience, two shades you can blend until they match.

What actually decides it

What decides how brows look is the shade and how precisely you put the color down. If you are unsure, go a touch lighter than your hair, because brows that are too dark look harsh very quickly. Fine-tip pencils like Hourglass's Arch, Rare Beauty's Brow Harmony, Bob Beauté's and ILIA's In Full draw hair-like strokes into sparse spots. Westman's Bonne Brow, Fenty's Brow MVP, MAC's Pro Brow Definer and Tom Ford's Brow Sculptor round out the pencils. The first group also keeps a few lip and face basics from the original edit, and EltaMD's SPF lip balms are worth having in any bag.

How to use it

Fill first, set last, and brush through between each step so nothing sits in a solid block. For fuller, more defined brows, Anastasia's DIPBROW pomade and Surratt's Expressioniste give the strongest color. Then set with a gel. ILIA's In Frame and Viève's Modern Brow Gel are clear and soft, Makeup by Mario's Master Hold and MAKE's Infinite Hold are firmer, and Rare Beauty's laminating gel is the one for that brushed-up look. GrandeBROW is the odd one out, a serum you use at night if you want brows to look fuller over time.

Our honest take

You don't need every pencil and gel here. Most people need one product to fill and one to set, and that is the whole routine. If you take one thing away, match the shade carefully, brush through after every step, and finish with a gel so your brows look the same at the end of the day as they did in the morning.
