Body Serum, for Skin That Doesn't Stop at the Neck

A body serum brings face-grade actives like retinol, acids, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid to your arms, legs and everywhere else. Here are sixteen, split between exfoliating and retinol serums and ones for hydration, firmness and glow.

Magazine-style product test page with seven cut-out products and a best-for note on each: Moroccanoil Night Body Serum; Topicals Slather Exfoliating Body Serum; EADEM Smooth Slate Ingrown Hair + Dark Spot Serum; Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Sculptor Firming Body Serum; Nécessaire The Body Vitamin C; Soft Services Software Update Retinol Body Serum; Nécessaire The Body Serum

Skin Doesn't Stop at the Neck

When Nécessaire launched in 2018, its founders built it around one idea. As co-founder Nick Axelrod told The Cut, skin care does not stop at the neck. Randi Christiansen had spent nearly 15 years at Estée Lauder, and Axelrod had co-founded Into The Gloss, according to Beauty Independent. Their Body Serum, with five molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, helped make body care feel like skincare.

That idea has spread. A body serum now means almost anything a face serum does, moved lower: salicylic acid for back and chest breakouts, retinol for crepey arms, AHAs for rough bumps, vitamin C for dull legs and hyaluronic acid for plain dryness. The difference is scale. You are covering a lot more skin, so texture matters. A good body serum sinks in fast enough that you can get dressed.

Most of these work best right after a shower, on skin that is still slightly damp. If you use retinol or acids on your body, put sunscreen on any skin that will see daylight, the same way you would on your face.

The first grid is body serums with acids and retinoids. The second is body serums for hydration, firmness and glow. My tip: start with the one area that bothers you most, like the backs of your arms, and treat only that for a month before you go all over.

Body Serums With Acids and Retinoids

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 0.5% Body Serum is the simplest fix for body breakouts, and it is fragrance free. Paula's Choice Weightless Body Treatment 2% BHA is the stronger salicylic option, a leave-on exfoliant for rough, bumpy texture, with chamomile and green tea to soothe.

Topicals Slather is the one I would hand anyone with strawberry skin or dry patches. It combines encapsulated retinol, urea, and lactic and glycolic acids in a milky lotion, and it won Allure Best of Beauty awards in 2024 and 2025. EADEM Smooth Slate targets ingrown hairs and dark spots with AHAs and azelaic acid, and it works on the face too.

For lines and crepiness, Soft Services Software Update pairs 0.25% pure retinol with 5% niacinamide, and it is fragrance free. Nécessaire The Body Retinol is a serum-in-balm with 0.1% retinol, 10% AHA and five peptides, and the brand warns that it has a clinical smell because of the actives. U Beauty SCULPT Arm Compound is made for arms, with retinol, caffeine and a marine extract for firmer-looking skin.

L'Occitane Almond Resurfacing Body Serum is the gentle, scented one, with 5% AHA and hyaluronic acid and a warm almond note.

What I would skip: using two of these on the same patch of skin on the same night. Alternate acids and retinol, and give your skin a night off.

Body Serums for Hydration, Firmness and Glow

Nécessaire The Body Serum is the one most people know. It is a fragrance-free gel with five molecular weights of hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and ceramide NP, and it absorbs fast. Nécessaire The Body Vitamin C is its brightening sibling, with THD ascorbate and tranexamic acid for dullness and spots.

Moroccanoil Night Body Serum is the most reviewed body serum here, an overnight blend of argan and tsubaki oils with a vitamin C ester for smoother, firmer-looking skin. Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Sculptor is the firming pick, with a Pro-NAD+ complex aimed at sagging and crepey skin.

CYKLAR Ceramide Milky Essence is the gentlest, a fragrance-free milk with ceramides, hydroxyethyl urea and polyglutamic acid that sinks in right away. Dr. Barbara Sturm Super Anti-Aging Body Serum takes her hyaluronic serum to the body, with brown algae, lima bean and peptides for firmness and the look of stretch marks.

AMAN Golden Body Serum has colloidal gold, boswellia and hyaluronic acid, plus a subtle gold shimmer that looks lovely on bare legs. SIDIA BRALESS The Body Serum is a gel with notes of coconut, leather, vanilla and peony, made to wear alone or under a body cream.

A pairing tip: use a hydrating serum in the morning and save the acids and retinol from the first grid for night.

What I would skip: a shimmer serum right before you put on a white shirt. Give it a few minutes to dry first.

One Goal, One Serum

I think a body serum earns its place when you have a specific goal: breakouts on your back, bumps on your arms, crepey knees, dull legs or skin that is always dry. Pick one serum for that goal and use it the way you would on your face, consistently, after a shower, with sunscreen on exposed skin if it contains acids or retinol. For everything else, a good body lotion still does the job, and there is no shame in that.
