Briogeo Shampoo, From Four Products and a Goldman Sachs Desk

Briogeo shampoo started in 2013, when Nancy Twine launched four products inspired by her mother's and grandmother's recipes. Here are eight Briogeo shampoos, plus the conditioners, masks and scalp serum that pair with them.

Recipes From Home

Nancy Twine was working at Goldman Sachs when she launched Briogeo in 2013. The Cut reports it started with four products, one shampoo and three conditioners for different textures. The recipes came from home. Twine has said she grew up making hair, skin and body remedies with her mom and grandmother, using natural oils, butters and extracts from a health-food store.

The name comes with her own explanation, from a Goldman Sachs alumni interview: Brio is Italian for vibrant and full of life, and Geo points to the earth and nature. She pitched samples to Sephora buyers at a 2013 Cosmoprof trade show in Las Vegas, and UVA Today reports the call came six months later, making her the youngest African-American woman to launch a line at Sephora.

That history shows in Briogeo shampoo today. The names are playful, like Don't Despair, Repair and Farewell Frizz, and most of the line leans on plant oils and food-based ingredients. The Superfoods range reads like a juice bar menu.

The first grid is eight Briogeo shampoos, from a charcoal scalp scrub to three Superfoods formulas. The second is the conditioners, two masks and a scalp serum.

My tip: pick by your scalp first and your lengths second. Briogeo has a shampoo for oily scalps and a mask for dry ends, and using both is often the right answer.

Eight Shampoos, From Scrub to Superfoods

Scalp Revival Charcoal + Coconut Oil Micro-Exfoliating Scrub Shampoo is the one I would try first if your scalp feels congested. It is a sulfate-free scalp scrub and shampoo in one, with charcoal to detox and fine exfoliants to lift buildup. Use it once a week, not every day.

Don't Despair, Repair Rich Rice Shampoo Concentrate is a water-activated treatment shampoo for damaged hair, and Farewell Frizz Smoothing Shampoo uses rosehip, argan and coconut oils to fight frizz. Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Avocado Hydrating Shampoo is creamy and made to hydrate curls. Destined For Density Caffeine + Biotin Peptide Density Shampoo is lightweight, for thinning hair that needs to look fuller.

Then there are three Superfoods shampoos, which are the fun part. Matcha + Apple Replenishing is a green juice-inspired formula for everyday balance. Banana + Coconut Nourishing is for dry hair. Mango + Cherry Oil Control & Balancing is made for oily roots.

A test that helps: after washing, notice how your roots feel at the end of the next day. If they are greasy, try Mango + Cherry. If your scalp feels tight, try Banana + Coconut.

What I would skip: the Scalp Revival scrub on a sensitive scalp. The exfoliants are gentle, but they are still exfoliants.

Conditioners, Masks and a Scalp Serum

Don't Despair, Repair Deep Conditioning Hair Mask is the Briogeo product I would buy even if I did not use the shampoo. It is a weekly mask that balances protein and moisture, which is exactly what damaged hair needs. The Don't Despair, Repair Super Moisture Conditioner is the daily version, and the brand says it is clinically shown to strengthen damaged hair.

The rest of the conditioners match the shampoos. Curl Charisma Rice Amino + Shea Curl Defining Conditioner seals in moisture for curls. Farewell Frizz Smoothing Conditioner uses the same rosehip, argan and coconut blend as the shampoo. Destined For Density Caffeine + Biotin Peptide Conditioner is lightweight, for thinning hair.

Be Gentle, Be Kind Aloe + Oat Milk Conditioner is fragrance-free and hypoallergenic, for a sensitive scalp. Superfoods Avocado + Kiwi Mega Moisture Hair Mask is a protein-free mask packed with fruit extracts, for hair that needs moisture more than strength.

Scalp Revival Charcoal + Tea Tree Scalp Treatment Serum is a soothing leave-on for an itchy, irritated scalp.

A pairing tip: alternate the two masks. Use the Don't Despair, Repair mask one week and the Avocado + Kiwi the next, so your hair gets strength and moisture in turn.

What I would skip: the Density conditioner on thick hair. It is made to add fullness, and thick hair does not need the help.

Treat It Like a Menu

I think Briogeo shampoo is at its best when you treat it like a menu. Pick a shampoo for your scalp, a conditioner for your texture, and one of the masks for your ends. Keep the Scalp Revival scrub for once a week and let the gentler shampoos do the daily work. Nancy Twine started with four products built on recipes from her family, and the line still has that homemade spirit. It is playful, specific and easy to mix.
