The Cartier Santos began in 1904 as a wristwatch for a pilot, and this edit sorts pre-owned Santos, Santos-Dumont, Panthère, Tank and Ballon Bleu watches by shape. I say when I would reach for each one and what to check before you buy.
Cartier Santos: Square Pre-Owned Watches Born From an Aviator's Complaint

In 1904, Louis Cartier made a special watch for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian aviator who needed a timekeeper he could check without taking his hands off the controls of his early aircraft. Hodinkee describes it as a little gold watch with exposed screws and a square profile. I love that. A dress object that began as cockpit equipment.
That is the whole attitude of the Cartier Santos for me. Around 1911 the house put the watch into production and sold it at its Paris flagship, with tiny hand-wound movements made together with Le Coultre. Square case, visible screws, Roman numerals: it still looks like a tool that learned manners. A Cartier watch like this is happy to be worn, and I want to say plainly that every piece here is pre-owned, and each one lists its condition.
Start with the two-tone ones, because the Santos Lady in steel and gold and the two-tone Santos Galbée both echo the 1978 model with gold screws on a steel bracelet. The Galbée reference 2423 and the midsize Galbée with the ivory dial and date at 6 o'clock are the clean steel pair, good with a white shirt. For small wrists, the 28mm Santos with the silver dial is the one I would reach for first. The Santos de Cartier in gray and the one in deep green are the bigger, 39mm statement, and the Santos 100 on a black strap carries the 2004 centennial shape.
Before you fall for one, check what comes with it. The gray and green Santos de Cartier list original papers, and the small steel Santos has papers dated 2026. Ask for the same on any pair you like, and try the bracelet on your wrist, since the Galbée two-tone fits about a 6 inch wrist.

Slim cases and gold straps
Slide any of these under a shirt cuff and you learn quickly which ones were built for it. The Santos-Dumont is the thinner, dressier side of the family, and the two Santos Demoiselle watches in steel are the easiest place to begin. The 20mm one on a panel link bracelet is tiny and neat, and the midsize with the white Roman dial suits a wrist that likes a bit more presence.
The large steel Santos-Dumont on a black alligator strap has blued sword hands and papers, and I would wear it with a gray suit or a white tee, nothing in between. The 38mm rose gold one with a white dial and black strap is softer, and the rose gold with the diamond-set bezel is the evening choice. Its listing says full set, which is exactly what I want to read on a piece like that.
The yellow gold watches are my favorites. The slim 2649 on a burgundy strap is manual winding, so you wind it each morning like a small ritual. The vintage one from around 1970 has a Paris dial that is spidering, and I find that more handsome than a perfect dial. The mini Extra Plate from 1985 is serviced and comes with its box. That is the detail I would ask about on any watch of this age.
What I would skip: making the vintage gold one a daily knock-about piece. Manual winding and an aging dial prefer a quieter life, so save it for dinners and days you can look after it.

Panthère, Tank and Ballon Bleu
Round, rectangular and square cases ask for different wrists, so I try them one shape at a time. The Panthère watches are the soft, supple ones. The Panthère Vendôme in yellow gold with factory diamonds is 24mm and listed without box and papers, so I would ask for any service history before deciding. The champagne dial Panthère from about 2018 is the warm one, and the steel Panthère with the dark dial is the one I would wear every day with jeans.
Then the Tanks. The Tank Française medium has a silvered dial and blued sword hands, and the smaller 25mm steel Tank Française has a blue cabochon crown that I find very pretty. The Tank Anglaise has curved case sides, and its listing includes a dated warranty card, a nice sign that someone kept the paperwork.
The Ballon Bleu is the round outlier. The 33mm steel automatic has the crown guard that gives it away from across a table, and the 28mm quartz with the blue cabochon crown and silver dial is small enough to disappear under a sweater sleeve.
A condition test works across all of these: look at the corners and the case sides in strong light, and see whether the edges still read crisp rather than rounded off. Then check that the crown turns smoothly and the bracelet clasp closes with a clear click.

Choosing one without overthinking
Here is what I would do. Pick the shape that fits the clothes you already wear: square for tailoring, round for knitwear, rectangular for the person who likes a quiet thing on the wrist. Then pick the metal, steel for every day and gold for the days you want a little ceremony.
Next, read the condition grade and the extras, papers, box or warranty card, and ask about anything missing before you commit. Put it on, move your arm, tuck it under a cuff.
Santos-Dumont wanted a watch he could check without letting go of the controls. I would choose the one you glance at once and then forget about, because that is the whole point. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together Cartier Panthère Watch and Cartier Tank Guide.
