Cotton On Sweatpants

Sweatpants stopped being a compromise garment somewhere around 2021 and never went back. Cotton On sweatpants are a good index of how far that went, because the range now includes bootleg, barrel and balloon cuts rather than one tapered jogger. This edit splits the heavier fleece from the lighter everyday pairs.

Cotton On sweatpants and joggers

The interesting thing about Cotton On sweatpants is that the leg shapes come from denim rather than from athletics. A barrel leg and a balloon leg are tailoring ideas applied to loopback cotton, which would have looked absurd ten years ago. Low rise has come back alongside them, and on a soft trouser it reads much less aggressive than it did on jeans. The lineage runs from nineties skate and hip hop through the 2010s athleisure boom, which flattened everything into a single tapered jogger. The correction has been to make the shapes weird again.

Baggy and bootleg sweatpants

The baggy sweatpant keeps its volume the whole way down and stacks on a sneaker. The low rise bootleg sits lower on the hip and opens slightly at the hem.

Cotton On fleece and track pants

Fleece is the warmer, heavier half of the range and it behaves differently. A brushed interior adds loft, which fills out a wide leg and stops it collapsing around the ankle. The adjustable hem versions solve the single biggest problem with a wide sweatpant, which is that it drags. Sculpting panels on the bootleg pairs are borrowed straight from activewear, used here for line rather than performance. Woven stretch sits at the other end, closer to a real trouser and much easier to leave the house in.

Sweatpants built for moving

The Active relaxed sweatpant is cut for training first, so the fabric is thinner and dries faster. The Sculpt fleece bootleg is the warmer one, with a heavier brushed inside.

Our honest take

Fast fashion sweatpants live or die on fabric weight, and it is the only thing worth checking before you buy. The heavier fleece pairs hold their shape through a lot of washes and the thin jersey ones do not. Bootleg is the shape that will look most dated fastest, and the barrel is the one that will not. If you want one pair, take a mid-weight straight or barrel in a colour that is not black, because black fleece fades visibly. Buy your normal size rather than sizing up, since the volume is already in the pattern.
