David Yurman started in 1980 as a Tribeca studio project between a sculptor and a painter, and the twisted Cable design they hand made a few years later became the house's whole vocabulary. Notes on how that one motif carries across bracelets, rings, earrings and necklaces, and why one piece usually says more than four.
David Yurman

One Motif, Every Category
David Yurman started as a sculptor's side project. He and his wife Sybil, a painter, set up shop in a Tribeca studio in 1980, and a couple of years later David hand twisted roughly fifty feet of gold wire into a helix, the first Cable piece. He has said the shape owes something to ancient torque necklaces he saw at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. That single idea is still the spine of the house, which is why a bracelet, a ring, an earring and a necklace can all read as the same design language without matching.
I would start with one category rather than a set. The Cable 18-karat gold diamond bracelet has enough texture to stand out against a plain sleeve on its own, while the Sculpted Cable 18-karat gold bracelet takes that same twisted line in a smoother, heavier direction. Jewelry this substantial can feel like armor if every surface competes, so give the metal room to catch light instead of layering it against ten other pieces.

Let One Ring Earn Its Spot
I would not begin by asking which ring is the most recognizable. Start with the one you will actually leave on: the Cable 18-karat gold diamond ring for a subtler, everyday texture, or the Crossover Trio Six Row 18-karat gold diamond ring if you want more presence on the hand. I would avoid stacking every ring style at once unless that is already how you dress, since the sculpted texture reads better with a little space around it.
Scale and weight change how a ring feels to type or carry a bag with, so try the exact ring rather than judging it from a photograph. David Yurman's cable idea has grown into thousands of variations by now, but the point of wearing one is not to display every version of it on the same hand.

Near The Face, Not The Hands
Earrings do a different job than a ring or a bracelet, since they sit near the face rather than moving with your hands all day. The Sculpted Cable 18-karat gold hoop earrings keep the house's signature texture in a shape most people already wear often. The Starburst 18-karat gold diamond earrings take a more faceted, pointed approach for anyone who wants more sparkle near the face. I would choose scale based on how your hair is usually worn, since a hoop or a stud reads differently when it is fully visible. A single considered pair earns more attention than several similar ones rotated without much thought.

The Necklace That Stands Alone
A necklace is the piece most likely to be worn by itself, without a ring or earrings to back it up. The Sculpted Cable 18-karat gold diamond necklace carries enough texture to do that job on its own against a plain neckline. The DY Mercer 18-karat gold necklace takes a quieter, more minimal route for anyone who wants the same design language without as much presence. I would choose length based on the neckline you wear most, since a shorter chain reads differently than one that layers under a collar. Either way, one necklace worn daily says more than several worn occasionally.

Worn Daily, Not Saved
David Yurman's Cable idea earns repeat attention because the same twisted line reads clearly whether it shows up on a bracelet, a ring, an earring or a necklace, and none of the four need to be worn together to make the point. If anything the design reads more clearly with space around it. I would rather see one piece worn every day than four saved for an occasion, since the texture is what makes the case, not the volume of metal on your body. Sybil and David built this out of a studio project in 1980 and kept the ownership in the family ever since, and that continuity is part of why the codes hold up across decades of styles. Pick the single category that fits your existing rotation and let it earn its place before you add a second.
