Deme by Gabriella: Draped Dresses and Occasionwear

Deme by Gabriella: Draped Dresses and Occasionwear

Deme by Gabriella was established in 2012 by Gabriella Demetriades, a South African-born former model who settled in Mumbai and designs from an atelier there. Her idea was luxurious yet accessible occasion wear, built on clean lines, sensual cuts, bold color and dreamy drapes. This edit gathers Suzie and Isla draped maxi dresses, silk styles like Marita and Brenda, the Kianna lace set, and tops such as Conure and Tupelo.

Draped maxis and silk gowns

Gabriella Demetriades was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and came to India as a model before turning to fashion. She settled in Mumbai and started Deme in 2012 from an atelier there, after seeing a gap for occasion wear that felt luxurious yet accessible. She names Phoebe Philo as an inspiration, and the codes she describes are clean lines, sensual cuts and bold color, with dreamy drapes as the signature. The Suzie draped stretch-jersey maxi is the clearest example, and it is the one Gigi Hadid wore in olive green to her sister's wedding in late 2025. The Isla draped stretch-woven maxi follows the same idea. For silk, look at the Exclusive Marita silk maxi, the Brenda draped silk maxi and the Sabrina silk-chiffon dress, and for something with more air, the Colleen cowl-neck chiffon gown. The Starling draped mesh mini is the short one. If you are dressing for an invitation, my guide to maxis and midis for a wedding invitation will help you match length to dress code.

Color, ruffles and mini lengths

Deme is an internet-first brand, and pieces are largely made to order, which helped it grow without outside funding. The Alice ruffled silk maxi and the Patty asymmetric silk maxi are the two with the most movement, while the Milan silk maxi is the cleaner line. The Daphne and Azalea are draped stretch pieces in the same family as Suzie, and Crocus adds long sleeves. The Nicola mini dress is the shortest of the group. For a guest in a darker palette, the brown wedding guest gowns with slits and soft satin make a good companion list. What I would skip is wearing a heavily draped maxi with a bulky wrap; the folds are the point, so choose a shawl or a slim jacket instead. A quick test for any of these: walk up a flight of stairs in the dress you plan to wear, and check the drape follows you.

Sets and separate pieces

Not every occasion needs a gown, and the sets are a smart answer. The Betty gathered jersey skirt set, the Macael silk set and the Carly set each give you a matching top and bottom that can be split up later. The Kianna lace two-piece set and the Cape 3-piece set are the most dressed up, while the Begonia, Storkie and Canna pants and the Balsa short work as separates. The Indigo skirt and the Zerina skirt bring the color story down to the waist. Think about how you would wear each half again before you choose, since the best sets earn a second life. For a formal look that is not a dress, the garden formal wedding guest guide is a useful reference.

Tops, capes and a jacket

The last group is for building outfits around pieces you already own. The Conure, Tupelo, Sage and Storkie tops are the easy picks, while the Indigo top and the Kianna top match their skirts and pants from the section above. The Zerina cape and top is the most theatrical, and the Begonia jacket is the one to throw over a dress when the evening cools down. Because the brand speaks in clean lines and bold color, a plain skirt and one of these tops can read as eveningwear without trying too hard. For more ways to mix pieces by occasion, I keep a list of elegant dresses and separates by occasion.

How I would wear it

In our fashion dreams she is arriving at a long dinner in the Suzie maxi, with nothing on top of it but good shoes and a small bag. If you want the boldest shade, my list of red dresses for when only red will do is a good place to compare. That is the Deme idea in short: a clean line, a bold shade and a drape that moves.
