Maximalism came back not through colour but through surface, which is why this season reads rich rather than loud. Faux fur, sequin, feather and crystal have replaced the stripped-back minimalism that governed the last few winters. This edit is about texture doing the work that print used to.

Outerwear

Faux fur is the defining material of the season and it is no longer a novelty purchase. Cropped jackets and suede-trimmed shapes have moved it from party outerwear into something worn on an ordinary evening, which is a real change in status. The shorter the cut, the more current it reads.

More Outerwear

More of it, and boxier. Oversized and mink-effect shapes are the ones that carry the whole opulence argument, and they work precisely because everything underneath stays plain. A big coat is permission to under-dress.

Still more Outerwear

A final short run at the top end. Melange and full-length versions are the most committed expression of the trend and the least versatile, which is the trade-off with any statement outer layer. Buy one, not three.

Dresses

Evening dresses have gone decorative again. Feather trim, lace and strapless midi cuts are back after a long stretch of the plain slip being the only acceptable answer, and the shift tracks with people actually going out more. Ornament stopped being embarrassing.

More Dresses

The longer ones make the case at full scale. Fit-and-flare gowns and lace maxi shapes are where the season is at its most unapologetic, and there is no way to wear these quietly. That is the point of them.

Tops

Tops are where the trend becomes practical. Lace trim, sequin and satin panels give you the surface without the full commitment of a gown, which is how most people will actually wear this. It is the same substitution happening across evening dressing everywhere.

More Tops

Two more, in jacquard and knit. These sit closer to daywear and are the pieces that let the look survive outside a specific kind of night. Quietly the most useful things here.

Bags

Bags have gone small and heavily worked. Beading, crystal and kisslock hardware are doing the decoration, and the shrinking size is what makes that much ornament tolerable. A large bag in these materials would be unbearable.

More Bags

Shoes follow the same logic: velvet, metallic and thong shapes with visible embellishment. The heel is present but not extreme, because the surface is already doing the shouting. Comfort has stopped being the selling point and started being the baseline.

Shoes

Four more, and harder-edged. Kisslock frames and crystal-trimmed pouches are the most literal evening bags in the edit, built for a night with a cloakroom. Small enough that the ornament never tips over.

Jewelry

Jewelry is sculptural rather than delicate. Rhinestone and pendant pieces with real scale are what finish an outfit built on texture, since a fine chain simply vanishes against sequin and fur. Scale is the whole brief.

Skirts

Skirts and coordinated sets are the sleeper category. Satin, lace trim and embellished separates let you build the look in halves, which is more flexible and more wearable than the single-garment approach. Sets in particular have quietly taken over.

Trousers

Trousers appear briefly, in bootcut and printed silk. These are the pieces that make an opulent top half work on a normal night. Necessary, not exciting.

Knitwear

Knitwear is the smallest grid and the most surprising one. Lace-sleeved and fringed cardigans are how the trend leaks into daytime, and they are the reason this look now shows up at four in the afternoon. A cardigan is a strange vehicle for opulence and it works.

Also in the edit

The rest is shrugs, faux mink and pieces that refuse a category. Any trend built on surface generates garments that are hard to name. This is where they live.

Our honest take

Texture-led maximalism is a much better idea than colour-led maximalism because it photographs well and still works in a dim restaurant, which is where most of this gets worn. The failure mode is stacking three heavy surfaces at once and ending up looking upholstered. One loud material, everything else plain, and the whole thing holds.
