Flower necklace: A Small Garden With a Long History

Flower necklace: A Small Garden With a Long History

Flower necklace options move from sculpted gold pendants to enamel daisies, gem-set blooms, and pearl flowers. I would decide first whether I want the flower to be a whisper or the whole point.

Gold flower pendant necklaces

At the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, Art Nouveau reached a peak. René Lalique was known as a leading Paris fashion jeweler, and his work let nature take a turn through materials and flowing lines instead of insisting on literal realism. That is where I want to begin with the flower necklace: not as an accessory assigned to one kind of outfit, but as a tiny argument about scale.

The V&A traces recognizable flowers in jewelry to the early 19th century, amid interest in botany; by the 1850s, floral arrangements had grown more intricate, with blooms carrying messages of love and friendship. I like that the motif can be sentimental without becoming saccharine. On a chain, the same idea can be reduced to one petal, or repeated in a row.

In the first selection, Ana Luisa's Mini Flower Station Necklace makes the chain itself part of the design, with three tiny flower stations and lab-grown diamond centers in 10K solid yellow gold. Yellow Rose by Kendra Scott's Ansel Rose chooses one sculpted rose on a vintage-gold chain, while Kendra Scott's Leanne uses textured gold petals around natural mother-of-pearl. Moon & Meadow's 14K yellow-gold pendant is the quieter single bloom; Roberto Coin's daisy adds diamond accents, and Sydney Evan's small burst keeps its diamond in one starry flower charm. I would set one pendant against an open neckline, then check the stated chain range and extender before deciding how high it sits.

Daisy and enamel flower necklaces

Enamel gives a flower its color without asking a gemstone to do all the work. The GIA notes that enameling could represent delicate floral colors that gems alone might not convey, which helps explain why this group can be bright without getting complicated.

Ted Baker's Fulla Furled links white enamel flowers with crystal centers; the necklace is 15.74 inches long. Marc Jacobs's Mini Daisy is a single brass pendant on an antique-gold chain, while its Dots Daisy collar takes a wider route with a hinged, crystal-wrapped shape and enamel ends. Ted Baker's Fern puts glossy purple enamel around a crystal. Spero London's sterling-silver daisy keeps its white petals and yellow center neat; Anni Lu's Flower Power uses multicolored bead flowers and imitation pearls for a looser look.

I would wear the single daisy with a plain crewneck and leave the collar for an open neckline. Check whether the chain length can be adjusted and how the closure opens. What I would skip: stacking the hinged collar with another busy pendant when the flowers are meant to be the point.

Gemstone and pavé flower necklaces

Colored stones let a flower keep its outline while changing its palette; the GIA notes that gems can be faceted or carved, while pearls and enamel can join them in floral designs. I would think about color first here, then decide how much sparkle I want beside it.

Julianna B's multi-gemstone pendant sets amethyst, citrine, peridot and white topaz into two blooms; its green leaf gives the cluster another color. The Morganite and White Topaz pendant moves to a cushion-cut center in rose silver. Tory Burch's Forget Me Not is brass with crystal pavé, while SAVVY CIE JEWELS uses cubic zirconia on sterling silver with 18K-gold plate. I would keep that material detail distinct from Sara Weinstock's Lierre, which sets five delicate petals with pavé diamonds in 18K gold. Sydney Evan's little 14K flower stays compact, and Roberto Coin's long Carnivale chain brings rubellite, tanzanite, blue topaz and citrine to its 31-inch length.

I would let one colored pendant be the only bright note against a knit. Check the setting and the exact chain length before choosing. What I would skip: a second long pendant beside the Carnivale if its gemstone flower should stay legible.

Pearl and flower necklaces

A pearl flower necklace can use shell-like mother-of-pearl or actual pearl beads, and this selection includes both. Ana Luisa's Liora and Kate Spade New York's mini pendant use mother-of-pearl in flower shapes; Set & Stones puts a July waterlily over a mother-of-pearl inlay on a gold-filled chain. Roberto Coin's rose frames mother-of-pearl with twisted 18K-gold petals and a tiny diamond center. The Lucy Quartermaine pendant goes another way, using six freshwater pearls in a sterling-silver flower, while Kenneth Jay Lane's linked design uses simulated pearls and glass crystals on goldtone.

BY ADINA EDEN keeps its mother-of-pearl flower on a 14K solid-gold chain. The cultured freshwater-pearl pendant uses tiny 3mm pearls for each petal, a smaller detail against its 18-inch yellow-gold chain. I would pair a pearl flower with a plain knit or a simple collar, not another bright pendant. Check chain removability, extender length and the clasp before deciding where the flower will sit.

One flower, chosen well

I would choose by silhouette first. For a discreet detail, I would begin with the three stations or a single small pendant; for color, the gemstone flower already carries a palette; for a softer center, I would look at mother-of-pearl or pearl petals. Then I would confirm the listed metal, chain length and clasp before choosing where it sits. Lalique and the Art Nouveau moment around 1900 remind me that flowers in jewelry need not be botanical copies. One small bloom can be enough.
