Gentleman Givenchy began in 1974 with a patchouli-rich scent by perfumer Paul Léger. Here are six Gentleman bottles and two classics to wear beside them, plus eight more men's fragrances I compared them with.
Gentleman Givenchy, From Paul Léger's 1974 Original to Society

A 1974 Scent, Rebuilt With Iris
Givenchy's Gentleman first came out in 1974, signed by the perfumer Paul Léger, and Olfastory describes it as distinguished and opulent, with patchouli and an unusual heart of iris and jasmine for a men's scent. Hubert de Givenchy had founded his house in 1952. In 2017 Givenchy rebuilt the fragrance with perfumers Olivier Cresp and Nathalie Lorson, who were asked to show what the original would smell like if it were made today, and iris moved to the front.
Since then the gentleman givenchy family has grown fast. An Eau de Parfum came in 2018, Boisée in 2020, the whisky-infused Réserve Privée in 2022, and Gentleman Society in February 2023, fronted by actor and musician Benjamin Clementine. Society is built on wild narcissus and a deep woody accord, with sage and cardamom on top and vetiver in the heart.
That range is the useful part. You can wear Gentleman as a warm, spicy scent for evenings or as a fresh, green one for the office, and still stay in the same family. Think of Society as the daytime line and Boisée and Réserve Privée as the evening ones, and choosing gets much easier.
The first grid is six Gentleman bottles and two classics I would put next to them. The second grid is eight more men's fragrances I compared them with. My tip: spray once on the chest and once on the back of the neck, then leave it alone, because rubbing your wrists together can dull the top notes.
Six Gentleman Bottles and Two Classics Beside Them
Givenchy Gentleman Society Eau de Parfum Extrême is the most reviewed bottle in this grid, a deeper take on Society with sage, peppermint and nutmeg on top. It is the one I would choose for winter nights. Gentleman Society Eau de Parfum is the original Society, green and woody with daffodil, vetiver and sage, and it is the easiest to wear every day.
Gentleman Society Ambrée is warmer, with juniper, tobacco and vanilla, and Gentleman Society Sport is the fresh one, with lemon and cedarwood, for summer and the gym bag. Gentleman Boisée is spicy and woody, with black pepper, iris and burning wood, and it shares the top rating in this grid with Society, Ambrée and Extrême. Gentleman Réserve Privée is the whisky one, made with a whisky absolute and iris, and it smells like a bar with a fireplace.
The two classics are here because they sit in the same lane. DIOR Homme Eau de Toilette is warm woods, with Atlas cedar, vetiver and patchouli, and Prada Luna Rossa Ocean is bergamot, iris and vetiver, clean and a little blue.
What I would skip: Extrême or Réserve Privée in a hot office. They are rich, so save them for evenings or cold days.

Eight More Men's Fragrances to Compare
Yves Saint Laurent Y Eau de Parfum is the most reviewed fragrance in this edit, fresh and woody with sage and geranium, and it is the closest match to Gentleman Society if you like green notes. Yves Saint Laurent MYSLF is softer, with orange blossom and woods, a good office scent. Prada Paradigme is bergamot, geranium and ambery woods, clean and modern.
BLEU DE CHANEL Eau de Parfum shares the top rating in this grid, citrus over labdanum, sandalwood and cedar, and it is the easiest gift here. Azzaro The Most Wanted Intense shares that rating too, sweeter, with cardamom and toffee over amber woods.
For something warmer, Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Le Parfum is cardamom, iris and vanilla, close to Gentleman Réserve Privée in mood. TOM FORD Ombré Leather is leather, violet and jasmine, though its rating is the lowest here. Maison Margiela Jazz Club is pink pepper, rum and tobacco, the one that smells like a late night in a good bar.
What I would skip: two of the fresh woody scents at once. Y, MYSLF and Paradigme sit close together, so pick one and add something warm instead. If you already own a Gentleman bottle, use this grid to fill the gap, not to repeat it.

Fresh to Warm, Same Voice
I think gentleman givenchy is one of the easiest men's fragrance families to build around, because it goes from fresh to warm without changing its voice. Start with Society Eau de Parfum for daytime, add Boisée or Réserve Privée for nights, and keep Sport for summer. If you want a second house, compare Bleu de Chanel or Y. Spray twice, not five times. A good fragrance should be noticed when someone leans in, not across the room. Wear it for a full day before you decide, because the dry down is what people remember.
