Ginette NY

Ginette NY

Frédérique Dessemond, a Marseille-born, Sorbonne-trained art history graduate, started Ginette NY in New York in 2002 after years of customizing vintage furniture and clothing rather than making jewelry from scratch. Her breakthrough was the Disc, a plain polished gold circle threaded on a fine chain and engraved with initials, which turned fine jewelry into something meant for daily wear rather than special occasions.

Jewelry

Dessemond had no formal jewelry training when she started, so she began with findings, the raw components jewelers usually assemble into other people's designs, and built her own vocabulary from there. That improvised, component-level approach to gold is still legible in a collection built around discs, fine chains, and the engraved initials that made the brand's name in the first place.

Our honest take

Twenty years on, Ginette NY's whole case for itself rests on refusing to treat fine jewelry as an occasion category, and the brand has mostly stuck to that discipline rather than chasing statement pieces. It is a narrow lane, but it is a lane the brand actually invented for itself in 2002, which counts for something.
