Gucci Bloom Perfume and the Tuberose Florals Like It

Gucci Bloom Perfume and the Tuberose Florals Like It

Gucci Bloom perfume was the first fragrance built wholly under Alessandro Michele, and it has grown into a whole garden of versions. Here is how I tell the Bloom bottles apart, plus the tuberose and jasmine perfumes and the floral hair and body mists I would pair with them.

Gucci Bloom was unveiled in 2017 as the first fragrance developed wholly under Alessandro Michele, who had become the house's creative director two years earlier. Master perfumer Alberto Morillas blended it around jasmine, tuberose and Rangoon creeper, a flower sourced from India that Gucci said was exclusive to this scent. Everything since then has been a variation on that garden, which is why the shelf can look confusing. Here is how I sort the gucci bloom perfume family.

The original is Gucci Bloom Eau de Parfum, a classic floral of Rangoon creeper, jasmine bud and tuberose. Bloom Eau de Toilette is the lighter one, with neroli in the mix, so it suits daytime. Bloom Parfum is the warm, gourmand one, with coral jasmine, Peru balsam and a vanilla base. Ambrosia d'Oro is brighter and musky, built around a golden flower accord with jasmine sambac. Eau de Parfum Intense brings in Lady of the Night and a deeper, moonlit mood. Profumo di Fiori and Nettare di Fiori complete the line, and I would only go by the names on those two. Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia is a different family, pear and white gardenia with a touch of brown sugar, and it won an allure 2022 Best of Beauty award.

A quick test: spray the original on one wrist and the version you are curious about on the other, then wait an hour. The drydown is where they split apart.

Tuberose and jasmine, beyond Bloom

Tuberose and jasmine turn up in all sorts of moods, and that is the fun of shopping this note. Armani My Way pairs tuberose with orange blossom and vanilla, and it is a refillable bottle. Carolina Herrera Good Girl takes jasmine and tuberose toward tonka bean and cocoa, while Good Girl Jasmine Absolute goes further into toffee and benzoin. Valentino Vendetta Donna opens on tuberose with a red orange nectar accord over sandalwood. Valentino Donna Born in Roma is jasmine with bourbon vanilla, and the brand calls it an everyday signature. Henry Rose Flora Carnivora is the fresh take, jasmine and tuberose with orange blossom in a bottle made from 90 percent recycled glass. Salt & Stone Ambrette & Pear is a quiet musky skin scent, and Armani Acqua di Gioia sits on the water side, with lemon and water jasmine.

Pairing tip: if you love Bloom but want it cooler, try Acqua di Gioia or Flora Carnivora. If you want it warmer, Good Girl and Donna Born in Roma are the closest cousins.

What I would skip: the sweet, toffee-heavy ones on a hot commute. Jasmine Absolute wants a cold evening, and a fresher jasmine will behave better when the air is heavy.

Floral mists for hair and body

A mist is how I wear a floral when I want the idea of a perfume without the commitment. Every one here is meant for more than just skin, so these are mists, not perfumes, and they go on lighter. Moroccanoil Fragrance Originale is a spicy amber with magnolia, made for hair and body. Gisou Wildflower Honey Infused Hair Perfume carries the brand's honey scent for your hair. Touchland Blush Rose Glow Essence layers lychee and strawberry with rose and peony. Sol de Janeiro Refresco Paraiso is a watery floral inspired by Rio's Grumari Beach. Fable & Mane Madurai Jasmine pairs jasmine sambac with red champaca and sandalwood. Carolina Herrera Good Girl Blush is the sweet vanilla one, and Salt & Stone Lily & Yuzu is the sparkling one. The Bamboo + Rose mist is green and garden-like, with a soft rose note at the end.

How to wear them: spray the mist on your hair ends and the back of your neck, then put your Bloom perfume on the wrists. The two meet halfway.

What I would skip: a heavy vanilla mist on top of a fresh perfume. They fight. Match the mist to the bottle, floral with floral, or choose a clean one like Lily & Yuzu to keep the perfume in front.

How to choose your Bloom

Start with the season and the hour. For days, I reach for the lighter Bloom Eau de Toilette or the original Eau de Parfum. For evening, Bloom Parfum, Ambrosia d'Oro or Intense have the depth. Flora Gorgeous Gardenia is what I pick when I want a fruitier white flower.

If you already love the Bloom garden, branch out through its notes: tuberose in Valentino, jasmine in Carolina Herrera, water jasmine in Armani. Then finish with a mist on your hair so the scent follows you in and out of a room. Try any of them on skin for an hour before you commit, because a perfume only makes sense once it has settled. Most of all, pick the one you notice when you catch it on your own sleeve the next morning.
