Lip liner is one of the few products where technique matters more than price. A $30 liner used as an afterthought, drawn on bare lips at the end, will look worse than a cheaper one used as a base and blended out with a finger before anything else goes on. The mistake I see most is picking a shade darker than the lipstick, which reads as a hard ring rather than definition. Match it closer to your natural lip or the lipstick itself.
