ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara and the Rest of the Look

Start With the Lashes
Sasha Plavsic started ILIA from her home in Vancouver. The idea took shape around 2008, the brand launched in 2011, and at the time clean makeup barely existed as a category. It took years to reach Sephora, and then years more for its mascara to climb. By Plavsic's own account, Limitless Lash took three or four years to become the best-selling mascara at Sephora, and it has held the spot since, with one sold every fifteen seconds.
I find that slow build reassuring. Nothing about ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara is loud. It is a clean lengthening formula that, in Plavsic's words, lifts and lengthens, does not flake and washes off easily at the end of the day. It suits a quieter eye, the kind of face that looks like you slept well rather than like you did your makeup. That also makes it the easiest way into the brand, because everything else ILIA makes follows the same idea: makeup that treats skin well and looks like you.
So this edit starts with the lashes and builds outward. The first grid is the eye: both mascaras, two liners, a shadow stick, brow products and an eye cream that preps under-eyes for concealer. The second grid is the rest of the face, from a skin tint with SPF to a lip crayon.
Here is a tip I like with a lengthening mascara: wiggle the wand at the root, then pull straight up and out. Two thin coats beat one heavy one, and let the first dry for a moment.
Eyes
Here is a five-minute eye that works on almost everyone, and every step is in this grid.
Start with Bright Start, the eye cream. It uses a plant-based retinol alternative with caffeine and peptides, and it is made to brighten and depuff while prepping skin for concealer, so do it first and let it sink in while you make coffee. Then one swipe of the Eye Stylus Shadow Stick across the lid, blended with a fingertip. It is a cream shadow that stays waterproof and crease-resistant for up to twelve hours, and it is safe for sensitive eyes.
For eyeliner, choose by your day. Clean Line is a liquid with an ultra-fine tip for a crisp, smudge-proof line. Thru Line is the pencil for long days and hot weather, waterproof and sweatproof for up to 24 hours. Then mascara: Limitless Lash, the lengthening one, for length and lift, or Fullest if you want more volume and drama, a volumizing formula with arginine and provitamin B5 that builds without flaking or smudging.
Brows last. The In Full Micro-Tip pencil is beginner-friendly, with soft, buildable pigment, so it is hard to overdo. Brush through with In Frame, a clear brow gel with a medium hold of about eight hours and a natural finish.
Here is a pairing I like: Limitless Lash all over and a coat of Fullest only on the outer corners. You get length everywhere and a little lift at the edges.
What I would skip: liquid liner and a strong shadow on the same weekday morning. Pick one to be the focus.

The Rest of the Face
ILIA's face products all follow one rule: they should look like skin that happens to be having a good day. So the trick is to use less than you think.
The Super Serum Skin Tint is the center of it, a dewy tint with mineral SPF 40, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, safe for sensitive skin and noncomedogenic. I apply it with my fingers and build only where I need it. The Skin Blur Serum Concealer is featherweight and self-setting, so a dot under the eyes and around the nose lasts through the day without creasing.
For color, choose cream or powder. The Multi-Stick is the cream blush option, a swipe on the cheeks and a tap on the lips, with a dewy, luminous finish. The Soft Focus Blurring Blush is a talc-free powder that blurs pores and lasts up to twelve hours, better if your skin runs oily. The Sunshift bronzer starts as a silky cream and dries down to a weightless powder, so it stays put without looking dusty.
For lips, Balmy Tint is a tinted balm with sheer, buildable color and rosehip oil. Lip Sketch is a crayon that works as both lipstick and liner, with a soft-matte finish that stays hydrating. If you need it, the Soft Focus Finishing Powder is talc-free and controls shine for up to twelve hours.
Here is a pairing I like: the Multi-Stick on cheeks and Balmy Tint on lips in a similar shade. The face looks put together without looking done.
What I would skip: powder all over a dewy skin tint. Keep the glow and powder only the center of the face.

Keep It Simple
I think ILIA Limitless Lash Mascara earned its place the slow way, over years rather than one big launch season. It is not the most dramatic formula at the counter, and that is the point. It makes you look like yourself with better lashes.
Build from there only as far as you want. Mascara, the skin tint and a Multi-Stick will get you through most mornings in a few minutes. Add a liner for evenings and the concealer when you need it. The rest of the line will be there when you are ready for it.
