Janessa Leone launched her eponymous hat line in Los Angeles in 2013, funded with personal savings from years of nannying while she considered law school. The origin story is oddly literal: on a trip to Paris she bought a vintage men's hat, opened the sweatband, and found the milliner's surname stitched inside, the same as her own.

Accessories
Accessories is the category the whole label grew out of, so it carries the most direct line back to that Paris hat and the traditional millinery techniques Leone spent years tracking down a manufacturer to replicate. She started with six styles and a small personal nest egg; this is what a decade-plus of the same instinct looks like at scale. Handmade construction remains the through line, not a marketing add-on.

More Accessories
A second wave of the same category, useful because Leone has always worked in small, repeated silhouettes rather than reinventing the shape every season. The label built its name on word of mouth from editors and stylists before it had a marketing budget, and the range still reads like it was designed to be worn, not photographed once and shelved. Straw, felt, trims, the vocabulary stays consistent.

Bags
Bags mark the brand's expansion beyond the hats that got it into Barneys in the first place, an extension of the same handmade, small-batch approach rather than a licensing bolt-on. Leone has kept the company self-funded since 2013, which tends to slow expansion but keep the point of view intact. Worth noting given how many accessory lines outsource this step entirely.

More from the collection
The rest of the edit fills out a label that started as a single niche product on purpose, Leone's own strategy for breaking into an industry she had no connections in. Two-plus years of research before the first samples shipped is unusual restraint for a debut label. What's left here is the widened version of that same original bet.
Our honest take
Janessa Leone is a good reminder that a coincidence makes a better founding myth than a business plan, but the actual staying power here is the hatmaking itself: a niche category chosen deliberately because it was small enough for an outsider with no fashion contacts to break into. Bags and other accessories are a logical stretch, though hats remain the reason people know the name. It has aged into a real house without ever taking outside money, which is rarer than it should be.
