Jenni Kayne Knitwear and Trousers

Jenni Kayne founded her label in Los Angeles in 2002 when she was 19, after one year at OTIS College of Art and Design. She wanted an all-encompassing American lifestyle brand in the spirit of Ralph Lauren, built on California classics that become heirlooms, with the Cocoon Cardigan and Fisherman Sweater as hero pieces. This edit gathers cardigans and crewnecks, relaxed trousers, cashmere accessories, suede mules, shearling clogs, midi dresses and coats.

Collage of relaxed neutral knits, soft sweaters and everyday outfits in calm natural settings.

Cardigans, crewnecks and quiet shirts

Jenni Kayne started her company in Los Angeles in 2002, when she was 19 and had spent one year at OTIS College of Art and Design. Her model was Ralph Lauren: she wanted to build an all-encompassing American lifestyle brand, only with a California point of view. Her own description is classics that transcend trends and become heirlooms, which is a bold promise for a sweater. The hero pieces back it up, and the oversized Cocoon Cardigan is the one most people know first. Here it comes as the cotton Cocoon cardigan, the cropped cotton Coccoon cardigan and the Cocoon V-neck cashmere cardigan, alongside the Cooper wool blend crewneck cardigan. The Fisherman Sweater idea shows up in crewnecks like the Teddy, the Amelia cashmere crewneck, the Chloe striped cotton crewneck and the oatmeal Sterling crewneck. The Frances cashmere polo, the Post collared merino wool blend rugby top and the relaxed silk oversized button up shirt are the quieter pieces for layering. For a deeper look at the sweater world around it, I like the Ralph Lauren sweater guide.

Trousers, skirts and the first denim

The trousers are where Kayne's relaxed idea gets practical. The Forme pants come in the regular and chocolate versions, the Skye pant and Paloma cotton Oxford pants are easy daytime cuts, and the Jones pleated wool pants add a little more polish. Silk shows up in the demi elasticated satin trousers, the silk relaxed cropped trousers and the textured silk relaxed fit trousers. Denim is new to the brand: in October 2026 it launched its first denim collection, Seeded Natural, in undyed Candiani fabric from Italy, and the Work wide leg denim jeans fit that story. The olive suede Wolf midi skirt and the leopard print slip skirt are the two skirts, and the Newport cotton shorts finish the group. What I would skip is wearing the slip skirt with a second shiny layer on top, since a soft cashmere crewneck keeps it grounded. For skirt shapes, this fall skirts story helps.

Cashmere accessories and soft shoes

Cashmere runs through the brand, and the smaller pieces show it well. The cashmere cabin sock, cashmere beanie, cashmere cable beanie and fingerless cashmere gloves make a small kit for a cold morning. The shoes are all about softness: the suede Miller mule, the sand shearling Ashby clog, the shearling Bare flat and the leather Carmine boots. Think of the set as the small layer between a coat and the rest of the outfit. A beanie and gloves in the same family of colors look intentional without trying hard. I would wear the Ashby clog with the cabin sock and a pair of wide trousers from the group above. When you want a deeper look at shoes like that, my guide to clogs is a good start.

Dresses, coats and a pillow

Kayne expanded into homewares in 2017, so a Sheridan square pillow fits the story, and her first store opened in West Hollywood in 2007. The dresses are the warm weather side: the Peninsula embroidered cotton midi dress, the Kinney linen midi dress, the Navy Hastings dress, the Wynn smocked dress, the Sway button front cotton poplin maxi and the Kit cotton poplin midi. The Blair dress is the one I would pick for a long lunch. For colder weeks there is the Jessica sweater coat, the Austin check wool blend coat and the Peak puffer jacket, and the Shore raffia visor waits for summer. If you are choosing a coat, wool coats are worth a look first.

How I would wear it

My Jenni Kayne wardrobe would be a Cocoon cardigan, the Forme pants and a pair of suede mules, with the Blair dress waiting for warmer days. The label began with one young designer and a Ralph Lauren sized idea, and the sweaters still carry that. Add a camel quarter zip beneath the cardigan on the coldest days, and let the rest of the closet stay quiet.
