John-Richard Collection

John-Richard Collection is a luxury home furnishings maker founded in 1980 and headquartered in Greenwood, Mississippi, which grew from a sideline of a large Delta furniture retailer into an international company. Its design signatures include exotic veneers, carving, reverse-painted glass with art motifs and natural agate and crystal accents. This edit gathers handblown glass sculptures, table lamps, vases and celestite boxes, framed giclee art by Mary Pratt and Debra Ferrari, faux floral arrangements, and a few small pieces like the Tamboril pendant.

Art glass, lamps and mineral accents

John-Richard Collection was formed in 1980 in Greenwood, Mississippi, as a sideline to a large retail furniture operation in the Mississippi Delta. It started as a five-person business and became an international company with offices and factories in Asia. Today the catalog runs past 6,000 SKUs across occasional furniture, lighting, home accessories, wall art, mirrors, botanicals and upholstered furniture. The design signatures are exotic veneers, carving, reverse-painted glass with art motifs, and natural agate and crystal accents, and you can see them across this first group. The Eggplant Purple and Turquoise and the Ocean Blue Waves handblown glass sculptures are the color statements, and the Impression vase, the Flirren vase, the Azure art glass vase and the Sunlit art glass sculptural vase give a mantel or console some height. The Rock Quartz Points with Rose Quartz Ball, the Festooned in Stones box with celestite and the Bird on Celestite Rock are the mineral pieces. For light, the Alabaster Tower table lamp, the Spring Has Sprung lamp and the Sinclair LED chandelier with fan carry the room. My notes on how to buy a table lamp online walk through scale and shade, and a fall home edit is a helpful companion for styling a shelf. A simple test: set a lamp's height beside the sofa arm, and check that the shade sits below eye level when you are seated.

Florals, framed art and furniture

The second group is for a room that needs a finishing layer. The Bougainvillea bouquet, Peonies Forever, the Wild Orchids arrangement, the Amethyst floral arrangement, the Figs and Magnolia faux-floral arrangement and the Enchanted Evening arrangement bring in color without watering. The wall art includes the Shelley Bolton triptych "A Way into Wilderness No. 1-3", Debra Ferrari's "Big Sky No. 1-2, Large" diptych, and several by Mary Pratt, including "Patterned Parade" and "Poppies No. 1-2". The brand says it works with award-winning designers and world-renowned artists, and the names on these pieces are a good way to see that. Furniture is here too, with the Lakewood armchair and the Gatsby bar cart, and the Brass Bunny Shoehorn is a small, playful object. A wall mirror guide for round, wavy and woven shapes is a good next step if you are planning a wall. What I would skip is hanging a diptych with a mirror directly beside it, since the two compete; give the art its own wall. For a smaller space, my guide to a sofa for a small living room pairs well with the Lakewood armchair.

Small pieces for the room

The last four pieces are the small things. The Tamboril pendant is a lighting piece, the Blushing Beauty floral arrangement is a gift for a host, the Quartz Crystal Bottle Stoppers set of four turn a decanter into a keepsake, and the Chateau vegan leather boxes, set of 2, bring order to a desk or a dresser. Pick one and place it near something larger, so the scale reads as intended. They are easy to add to a shelf without rearranging anything. The bottle stoppers and the boxes also make a tidy pair if you are dressing a bar cart or a bedroom dresser. Check the diameter of your decanter neck before choosing a set, and hold the boxes against the drawer or tray where they will live.

The pieces I would build around

If I were building a room, I would begin with one of the art glass sculptures and a lamp, then let a framed giclee and a floral arrangement fill in. John-Richard has been at this since 1980, and the best of it has a point of view about color, glass and stone. For a softer seat to sit beside it, a cloud couch with deep, modular and curved shapes would be my choice.
