Joico shampoo comes from a Los Angeles hairdresser who wanted a system that repaired damage from the inside. Here are eight Joico shampoos, plus the K-PAK Reconstructor and the conditioners and masks that pair with them.
Joico Shampoo, and the 1975 Keratin System Behind K-PAK

A Hairdresser's System
Steve Stefano was a hairdresser in Los Angeles in 1975, and he was not happy with what he had to work with. According to Estetica Magazine's fifty-year history of the brand, he wanted a hair care system that would penetrate deep, repair damage, strengthen and condition. The result was Joico, and its first big idea was K-PAK.
K-PAK was built around keratin, the protein your hair is made of, and Salon Magazine Canada describes it as a four-step regimen: clarify, acidify, reconstruct, hydrate. That sounds very clinical for the 1970s, and it was. Using keratin to rebuild damaged hair is common now, but Joico was one of the brands that made it a salon routine.
That history still shapes Joico shampoo. Most of the line is organized by what your hair needs repaired or protected: damage, dryness, color, age. The bottles look like they belong at a salon station, and the formulas tend to feel richer than drugstore shampoos.
The first grid is eight Joico shampoos, from K-PAK to YouthLock. The second is the K-PAK Reconstructor, the matching conditioners and two rich treatments.
My tip with Joico: pick your line by texture first. The brand labels which shampoos are for fine or medium hair and which are for thick or coarse hair, and choosing the wrong one is the fastest way to feel weighed down.
Eight Shampoos, From K-PAK to YouthLock
K-PAK Reconstructing Shampoo is the one to know. It is a gentle shampoo made with keratin that goes straight to damaged areas, and it is the everyday start of the K-PAK system. If your hair is bleached or heat styled, begin here.
Moisture Recovery is for thick, coarse, dry hair, and the brand says it restores elasticity and softness for a full day. HydraSplash is its lighter sibling for fine to medium hair, made with sea kelp and coconut water so it never feels heavy. Defy Damage Protective Shampoo is a rich everyday wash meant to help hair defend itself against daily damage.
For color, there are three. Color Balance Purple cools yellow tones in blondes and silver hair, Color Balance Blue neutralizes orange brass on lightened brown hair, and Blonde Life Brightening Shampoo cleanses blondes with tamanu and monoi oils. The blue one is the most useful and the least known, because brunettes with highlights often reach for purple when blue is what they need.
YouthLock Shampoo is made with collagen, for hair that has lost body and shine over the years. It lathers richly and leaves hair with more bounce, which is exactly what thinning, older hair tends to miss.
What I would skip: using purple or blue every wash. Once or twice a week keeps tone right without dulling your color.

The Reconstructor and Its Partners
If you buy one Joico product, the K-PAK Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor is it. It is the brand's signature treatment, a quick-acting formula that rebuilds and strengthens damaged hair in minutes. Use it after shampoo and before conditioner, and leave it on for a few minutes.
The K-PAK Reconstructing Conditioner follows it for daily moisture and detangling. Moisture Recovery Conditioner is rich and slippery for thick, coarse hair, and HydraSplash Hydrating Conditioner gives fine hair a light splash of moisture. Defy Damage Protective Conditioner is a daily bond-building formula meant to protect hair from future damage, and the Blonde Life Brightening Conditioner fights off-tones, frizz and dryness for blondes.
The two heavy hitters are the Defy Damage Protective Masque and the Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm. The masque is an intensive weekly treatment for strength and moisture balance, and the balm saturates thick, coarse hair with moisture and seals it in.
A pairing tip from the K-PAK system: shampoo, reconstructor, then conditioner. The order matters, because the reconstructor works best on clean hair and the conditioner seals everything in.
What I would skip: the Moisture Recovery Treatment Balm on fine hair. It is made for thick, coarse strands, and on finer hair it can feel heavy by day two.

Repair, Then Protect
I think Joico shampoo makes the most sense as a routine rather than a single bottle. Steve Stefano designed it that way in 1975, and it still works best as a system. Start with K-PAK and the Reconstructor if your hair is damaged, then move to Defy Damage or a moisture line once it feels stronger. Add a color shampoo once or twice a week if you need it. That is a salon routine you can keep going at home. Your stylist will probably notice the difference at your next appointment.
