La Ligne

La Ligne

La Ligne launched in 2016, founded by former Vogue editors Meredith Melling and Valerie Macaulay with Molly Howard, formerly of Rag & Bone. The brand began with a serious devotion to stripes, then widened the idea into polished everyday clothes with a distinctly New York ease. This edit follows that logic through soft knits, wide-leg trousers and dresses that know when to stop talking.

Stripes and soft knits

La Ligne was built around the founders’ conviction that stripes could be perennial without becoming predictable. Its knitwear keeps that premise practical, moving from cashmere blends to cotton sweaters and cardigans that can take a weekday seriously. Wear one with a clean trouser and let the line do its quiet work.

The wide-leg question

The founders came from Vogue and Rag & Bone, but the point here is less fashion history than useful proportion. La Ligne’s trousers and jeans make room through the leg while keeping the waist comparatively composed, which is why they work with a close knit or a tucked shirt. Start with a length that skims the shoe, not one that swallows it.

Dresses with room

La Ligne’s original idea was a wardrobe that could move between the ordinary and the dressed-up without changing its personality. These dresses use satin, jersey, linen blends and pleats to make that case, with shapes that feel considered rather than ceremonious. Add a flat shoe for daytime and change only the earrings at night.

Our honest take

La Ligne is at its best when it treats a familiar idea with discipline. The knits and wide legs are the strongest buys because they make repetition look intentional, while the more complicated pieces need a very specific occasion to earn their place. Skip anything that relies on novelty instead of cut. If you take one thing away, build the outfit around one clear line, then stop before it turns into a theme.
