Johanna Davenport Calica started La Porte out of Chicago in the late 2010s, naming it for the French word for door as a nod to opening up who gets to define resort dressing. The label reworks swimwear as fluid, ready-to-wear-style pieces rather than treating it as a separate, lesser category, and it took her four rejected applications before her collection finally showed at Miami's Cabana trade show in 2023.
La Porte

Swim
La Porte's founding argument is that a swimsuit deserves the same construction thinking as ready-to-wear, not a simplified version of it. That shows up here in sculptural cuts and silhouettes built to hold their shape rather than the stretch-and-hope approach common to mass swim. It is swimwear designed by someone who spent years being told no before an industry trade show finally said yes.

Tops and shirting
The label's stated approach treats swim and resort pieces as one continuous wardrobe, so the shirting here is meant to read as an extension of the beach pieces rather than a separate category bolted on. Expect the same structured, considered hand that defines the swim styles. It is dressing meant to move from sand to street without a full outfit change.

More from the collection
Davenport Calica has described the brand as a rejection of exclusionary, one-body-fits-all beach dressing, and the rest of the assortment keeps that mission visible in fit and range rather than in marketing language alone. These pieces round out the resort wardrobe beyond swim and shirting. The throughline is still La Porte's sculptural, ready-to-wear approach to warm-weather dressing.

Our honest take
A founder who was turned away from the same trade show four years running before finally breaking in has more to prove than most, and that persistence shows in how considered the construction feels compared to typical resortwear. The sculptural shaping is the label's real point of difference. Where it could stretch further is in offering more of the shirting and cover-up pieces alongside the swim, since that is where the ready-to-wear ambition is most visible.
