Leo Lin

Leo Lin

Leo Lin launched his namesake label, originally styled Leo + Lin, in 2017, after moving from Dalian, China to Melbourne, Australia at sixteen and studying Japanese rather than fashion design. The brand is now based in Sydney with production still rooted in his hometown atelier in Dalian, and it is defined by saturated color, hand embellishment and placement prints on unapologetically feminine silhouettes.

Dresses

Dresses are the category Leo Lin actually built his name on, shown first at Melbourne Fashion Festival in 2017 and picked up by David Jones the following year. The hand embroidery and placement prints require the pattern to line up exactly across every seam, which is slower and more exacting than it looks on the hanger. This is a designer without formal training who decided the only way to compete was to make the construction harder, not easier.

More Dresses

A second wall of dresses only makes sense once you understand how central the category is to this label, it is essentially the whole business, expanded out into more colorways and silhouettes. Lin has said he scoped Melbourne shopping centers for two weeks before designing his first collection, watching what customers actually reached for. The bold color choices are deliberate, not incidental.

Still more Dresses

By the third wall of dresses, the pattern is clear: this is a label built around a single, well-executed idea rather than a wide product range. The fabrics are sourced from Shanghai and Osaka, then embroidered and embellished largely by hand in the brand's own Dalian atelier. It is a lot of dresses, but the label has earned the right to repeat itself here.

Even more Dresses

The fourth grid keeps going because the assortment does, more special-occasion silhouettes in the same saturated palette that got Leo Lin into Neiman Marcus in 2022 and Bloomingdale's by 2024. What stands out across all of it is the consistency, the same hand, the same color confidence, across dozens of dresses. It is not a label that hedges.

More from the collection

Outside the dresses, the edit shows what else the label is trying, pieces that carry the same bold prints and feminine cut into other categories. It is a smaller part of the business than the dresses, which tracks with a designer who has said menswear was never on the table and womenswear is where his attention stays. Treat these as a supporting cast.

More from the collection

A further set of non-dress pieces rounds out the range, extending Leo Lin's color-forward, embellished approach beyond occasionwear. Given the brand's rapid US retail expansion since 2022, this is clearly a label still figuring out how far its aesthetic can stretch. The dresses remain the stronger argument.

Our honest take

Leo Lin is essentially a dress label that has grown a retail footprint around one strong idea: maximalist color and hand embellishment, executed by a self-taught designer who reportedly spent five months perfecting swing tags before he ever cut fabric. The dresses justify the attention; everything else here reads more like range-building than conviction. If you are shopping this edit for one category, make it dresses.
