Lip Mask Season and the Founders Who Took Bedtime Seriously

Lip Mask Season and the Founders Who Took Bedtime Seriously

The overnight lip mask went from a Korean bedtime idea to a fixture on American bathroom shelves, and every brand in this edit has its own take on it. Here is what a lip mask feels like across twelve balms, jellies and butters.

The lip mask in its current form took off in the United States in September 2017, when Laneige relaunched here through Sephora and led with its Lip Sleeping Mask. The Korean brand, launched in 1994 by Amorepacific, was built around hydration, and it sold the mask as part of a story about what your skin does while you sleep. By 2022 the Strategist called it the year of the Laneige lip mask, citing more than 14 million TikTok mentions. That is how a category gets made. Every brand in this edit works in its shadow, and the good ones have a point of view of their own. Vicky Tsai started Tatcha in 2009 after leaving Wall Street, and its jelly mask is built around Japanese peach. Ilia began in Sasha Plavsic's parents' garage in Vancouver, and its first product was a tinted balm. Fresh started in Boston in 1991 with a soap wrapped by hand. Fenty Beauty launched in 2017, and its sister line Fenty Skin makes Plush Puddin', which leans on pomegranate sterols. I judge a lip mask by how it feels at 7 a.m., not by what the jar promises.

Twelve boxes on a pale grey page, one for each product in this edit, each with its brand and name printed below: Tatcha The Kissu Hydrating & Plumping Lip Mask, Ilia Lip Wrap Overnight Mask, Fenty Beauty Plush Puddin' Intensive Recovery Lip Mask With Pomegranate Sterols + Vitamin E, Fresh Sugar Recovery Lip Mask Advanced Therapy, Lawless Forget The Filler Overnight Lip Plumping Mask, Rhode Peptide Lip Boost Plumping Lip Mask, Charlotte Tilbury Life Changing Lip Mask with Cushioning Ceramides, Laneige Midnight Minis Hydrating Lip Sleeping Mask Treatment 5 pc. Gift Set, goop Beauty Nourishing Lip Repair Mask, Allies of Skin Peptide & Ceramide Repair Lip Balm, Make Beauty Inner Tube Lip Treatment and Rare Beauty Find Comfort Lip Butter Balm + Overnight Mask with Hyaluronic Acid Butter.

The thick, cushioning end

The second grid is the thick, cushioning end of the category. Lawless was founded in 2017 by Annie Lawless Jacobs, a co-founder of Suja Juice, and it launched Forget the Filler as a gloss in January 2021 before adding an overnight lip treatment in early 2022. The name is a wink at injectables, so I only care about how it feels on the lips and whether it stays comfortable through the night. Rhode arrived in June 2022 with three products, and a peptide lip treatment was one of them. The Boost here is described as thick and balmy, which is exactly how I like to wear it. Charlotte Tilbury brings ceramides to a hydrating formula, and the Laneige Midnight Minis set gives you five small sizes of the original idea. Keep one by the bed and one in a coat pocket. My tip is to put on a thin layer, wait a minute, and blot the extra with a tissue before your head hits the pillow.

Founders who care about lips

Grid three is a reminder that lip care is often one founder's own problem to solve. Gwyneth Paltrow started goop in 2008 as a weekly newsletter sent from her kitchen, and its first clean skin-care line arrived in 2016. Its repair mask is a rich, buttery balm with a faint berry flavor. Nicolas Travis founded Allies of Skin in Singapore in 2016 and calls his approach supercharged clinical, which explains a twist-up formula packed with ceramides and peptides. Carrie Barber, a former beauty art director, relaunched Make Beauty with a partner, and her Inner Tube treatment is a plumping formula with a swelling peptide system. Rare Beauty comes from Selena Gomez and launched in 2020, and its butter is closest to a lip balm you can sleep in. What I would skip is picking at flaky lips or scrubbing them raw first. Let the mask soften things overnight and wipe gently in the morning.

How I would use them

I like to keep one mask in three places: on the nightstand, in a bag and next to the sink. The nightstand one gets a thick layer, the bag one gets a thin coat before lipstick, and the sink one covers whatever the morning looks like. Lips are small, and a few seconds of attention at night makes the rest of the day easier. Start with the texture you enjoy wearing, because the one you actually apply every night is the one that works.
