Marni began in Milan in 1994 as an offshoot of the Castiglioni family's fur business, and the very first collection was fur only. Consuelo Castiglioni started it with her husband Gianni, and the name comes from her step-sister Marina, who was called Marni. In 2001 she released the Fussbett sandal, made from recycled tires and straw, and that sense of the unexpected has always been the brand's calling card. The tops here come from the same off-kilter place. Since Francesco Risso became creative director in 2016, the house has kept its codes of color and pattern with a playful, childlike curiosity. OTB bought the house in two steps, with 60 percent in 2012 and the rest in 2015, and Marni has stayed itself. It is still the label that brings a little wit to an outfit.
