Maticevski

Maticevski

Toni Maticevski, a Melbourne designer who trained at RMIT and worked briefly for Donna Karan and Cerruti, launched his namesake label in Melbourne in 1998. He built a reputation on draping and sculptural, demi-couture silhouettes, an approach that earned him the 2016 Australian Fashion Laureate and a retrospective at Bendigo Art Gallery.

Dresses

Dresses are Maticevski's core discipline, the category his demi-couture training in draping and cut shows up in most directly. He turned down a permanent post at Donna Karan and chose two seasons at Cerruti instead, a decision that pushed him toward the tailoring precision still visible in these silhouettes.

More Dresses

A further run of eveningwear-leaning dresses, consistent with a designer who won Best New Designer at the L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival in 2002 and has spent two decades refining the same sculptural vocabulary. The mood stays dramatic without tipping into costume.

Tops and shirting

Even in simpler pieces, the label's draping instincts carry through, since Maticevski's training was built around manipulating fabric on the body rather than flat pattern cutting. It is a quieter category but the technique behind it is the same one that got him to Paris couture week.

Skirts

Skirts here favor the same sculptural line as the eveningwear, scaled to something more wearable. Maticevski relaunched the brand's core vision around 2011 to 2012, and this kind of piece, dramatic but not occasion-only, is a clear result of that recalibration.

Trousers and shorts

Tailoring is the least expected category for a designer known mainly for eveningwear, but it draws on the same Cerruti-honed precision Maticevski brought back from Paris. These pieces are the most restrained in the range, and worth a look for exactly that reason.

Our honest take

Maticevski's strength is genuine technical range in draping, built over more than twenty years and recognized with Australia's fashion laureate honor, and it makes the eveningwear here feel earned rather than trend-chasing. The daywear pieces are less distinctive, and if you are shopping this edit, the dresses are where the label's real argument lives.
