Milk Blush: Jelly Tints, Cream Sticks and Look-Alikes

Milk Blush: Jelly Tints, Cream Sticks and Look-Alikes

Milk blush began as a sideline of a downtown New York creative studio and became a jelly tint with a waitlist of more than 60,000. Here are the jelly tints, the cream sticks and the gel blushes I would wear beside them.

Milk Studios opened in New York's Meatpacking District in 1996, a place where photographers, filmmakers and creatives worked side by side. Twenty years later, in 2016, the founders launched Milk Makeup from that world, starting with a huge lineup of more than 80 products. The Cooling Water Jelly Tint, created by co-founder Dianna Ruth, went viral well before its 2024 launch and reportedly built a waitlist of more than 60,000. I like that a brand born in a photo studio ended up with a blush that feels like a snack.

Milk blush is really two textures. The Cooling Water Jelly Tint is a bouncy jelly stick for lips and cheeks that goes on sheer and builds to a watercolor finish, with vegan collagen, aloe and seawater. I think of this as the milk jelly blush, and it comes in Fizz (soft peach), Fresh (soft pink), Burst (poppy pink), Spritz (coral orange), Splash (berry plum) and Chill (red). The Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick with hyaluronic acid comes in two finishes, satin or blurred. Vapor is a soft mauve pink and Enigma is a rosy beige.

A quick test: swipe a jelly tint on the back of your hand and blend with one finger. It is a stain, so it sets quickly, and one cheek at a time is easier.

Milk's cream blush sticks

The cream stick is the everyday side of Milk. It is a creamy, long-lasting blush and lip color with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, pomegranate flower and jojoba oil, and the brand says it is vegan and cruelty-free.

Ether is a rich berry, the deepest of this group. Dash is a light pink with shimmer and Rally a pink mauve with shimmer, so those two are for nights or a lit-from-within cheek. Quirk is a spiced rose, Veil a true rose and Wisp a peachy pink rose. Cloud 9 is a mid tone pink, and Feather is a cool bright pink that would suit anyone who likes a fresh, just-came-in-from-the-cold cheek. Every shade also works on lips, so a single stick can carry the whole face.

Pairing tip: swipe the stick directly on the apples and blend upward with your fingers. Warm the stick against your skin first if it feels firm.

What I would skip: Dash and Rally on the apples in strong daylight if you want a matte look. Keep the shimmer shades high on the cheekbone, or choose Veil or Wisp for a softer finish.

Jelly and gel blushes like it

Milk did not invent the jelly blush, but plenty of other jellies and gels feel like a cousin. Here is who I would put beside it.

Lancôme Juicy Tubes Cheeks Jelly Long-wear Blush Tint in Peach 'N Roses is a warm poppy orange with caffeine, described as transfer-resistant. The Cheek & Lip Long-Lasting Gel Tint in Pink Splash is a bright cool pink with a large teardrop applicator. Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dewy Flush in Dragonfruit Flush is a tinted serum that plumps and hydrates, in a sheer bright pink. Makeup by Mario Jelly Jar Lip & Cheek Multi-Use Balm in Pink Sugar is a bouncy balm with vitamin E, hyaluronic acid and castor oil. MAKE Beauty Heat Stroke Dewy Gel Cheek Tint in Scorched and Chantecaille Cheek Gelée Hydrating Gel-Cream Blush are gel formulas I am describing from their names. Nudestix Gel Color Lip & Cheek Balm in Posh is a gel balm for both, and Glossier Cloud Paint in Beam is a soft peach gel cream with soluble collagen and a light coverage.

How to wear it: dab a jelly or gel where you would normally blush, then pat with a clean finger to soften the edge.

What I would skip: a jelly over a heavy powder. It grabs the powder and looks streaky. Apply it to bare skin or a light base, then let it set.

Choosing jelly or stick

If you are not sure which one to pick, use the finish to decide. A milk jelly blush like Fizz or Burst is the one for a sheer, cooling stain that builds. A cream stick like Veil or Wisp is the one for soft, comfortable color that also works as lip color.

Then choose the undertone by the collage above. Cool pinks like Fresh, Splash and Feather brighten neutral and cool skin, while Spritz, Fizz and Wisp warm up medium and deeper skin.

Keep the rest of the face simple, and blend until you cannot find the edge. Blush that reads as a little flush from a good day is the whole point.
