After a summer of salt, sun and air-drying, my hair wants moisture and a little structure. This fall edit keeps things simple, with products that each carry their weight in the routine. Here is what I am washing, treating, styling and sleeping on this season.
My Fall Hair Essentials

The Wash
Fall is when I switch to shampoos that put moisture back rather than strip it out. I wash less often as the weather cools, every second or third day, and focus the shampoo on the scalp. The lengths get cleaned by whatever rinses through, which keeps the ends from drying out. Conditioner goes on the mid-lengths and ends, and I comb it through in the shower before rinsing with cool water. That one change in the shower does more for fall frizz than anything I add afterward.
The Treatment
Treatment is the step most people skip, and the one I would protect first once the air turns dry. Once a week I swap conditioner for a mask and leave it on for as long as I can, ideally while I do the rest of my routine. After every wash, a few drops of oil or a leave-in cream go through the ends while my hair is still damp. I warm the product between my palms first so it spreads evenly instead of landing in one spot. A little goes a long way, and too much just weighs hair down.

The Styling
Styling in fall means volume and soft hold rather than a sleek summer finish. Heat protection always goes on first, combed through wet hair before the dryer comes out. I rough-dry most of the way, then use a brush only for the final few minutes to smooth the top. A mousse at the roots gives lift on wash days, and a texturizing spray brings second-day hair back to life. A light mist of hairspray at the end tames flyaways without making anything stiff.

The Tools
Good tools make the products work harder, and these are the ones I would keep on the vanity year round. I detangle with a wide-tooth comb in the shower, starting at the ends and working up, and never take a brush to wet hair. A soft brush is for dry hair only, a few strokes before bed to move the scalp's natural oils down the lengths. On days I do not want to style at all, a claw clip holds hair up without creasing it. At night I sleep on silk, which means less friction and fewer tangles by morning.

Our honest take
Most fall hair problems come down to dryness, and the fix is less dramatic than a new cut. Moisture in the wash, one real treatment a week and a lighter hand with heat will do more than any single product here. If you take one thing away, make it the leave-in step: an oil or milk serum after every wash is the simplest habit with the most visible payoff. The styling products are there for texture and hold, so choose based on how you like your hair to move. The silk pillowcase is my wildcard pick, and the one I would tell anyone to try first if their hair looks flat by morning. None of it needs to be complicated to work.
