Navy and Black Together

Navy and Black Together

Navy on top, black below: the knits, shirts and jackets, the black trousers and skirts, and the bags and shoes that make the old rule look outdated.

For a long time, navy and black were supposed to be kept apart. The idea was that the two were too close, so wearing them together looked like you had dressed in the dark. I have never found that to be true. Navy next to black looks deliberate and a little softer than all black, and it is one of the easiest ways I know to make a dark wardrobe feel less flat.

The trick is contrast in texture, not colour. A navy cashmere sweater with black wool trousers, a navy silk shirt with a black leather skirt, a navy jacket over black jeans. When the fabrics are clearly different, the eye reads the two colours as separate choices rather than a mistake.

I start with navy on top, close to the face, where I find it kinder than black in winter light. Nili Lotan's Vitus shirt in midnight is $290, and the Julius cashmere sweater in dark navy is $690.

Navy and black mood board: navy hydrangeas, a Khaite navy suede hobo, a navy jacket and trousers, navy suede boots, a Parisian room with navy curtains, black loafers, a navy polo with black trousers, a black top-handle bag and an ink bottle
Navy and black, together on purpose.

Once the top is navy, the bottom half can be as black as you like. I would pick one strong shape, a wide trouser, a long pencil skirt or a straight jean, and let the navy knit or jacket sit over it. Leather, wool and denim all work against navy knitwear, because each has a surface that looks nothing like cashmere.

St. Agni's Adjustable Palazzo pant at $249 is the relaxed option, with a lot of movement at the hem. Their Leather Pencil Skirt at $329 is the one I would pair with a navy silk shirt for something a little sharper. Khaite's Roma pant in black wool and Petra skirt are the more tailored end, and Nili Lotan's Shon jean in black is what I would wear on a weekend with the Julius sweater and loafers.

If you are unsure, hold the navy piece up next to the black one in daylight before you buy. Some navies look almost black indoors, and the point is for the difference to show.

Accessories are where you decide which colour wins. Black shoes and a black bag make the outfit read as black with a navy top. A navy bag or boot pulls it the other way and makes the whole thing feel softer.

I like one of each. A black loafer, like Mansur Gavriel's Ruched Loafer at $545, with Khaite's Mini Olivia hobo in midnight navy suede. Or Khaite's Clive ankle boot in navy suede with By Far's Mini 2.0 top-handle bag in black semi patent at $450.

Nili Lotan's Jagger bag in midnight and Mansur Gavriel's Candy hobo in black are the bigger, everyday options. For something dressier, Khaite's Marlene boot in black has a sleek, close fit that works under a long skirt.

Keep the metal small and quiet, a thin buckle or a simple clasp, so nothing interrupts the two dark colours. If you only buy one thing, make it the navy bag, since it is the piece that makes a black outfit suddenly look like a choice.

Our honest take

If you take one thing away, let it be that navy and black look best when the difference is obvious. Different textures, clear shapes, and a clear line where one colour stops and the other starts.

We would skip navy and black in the same fabric, like a navy wool blazer with black wool trousers of an almost identical weave. That is the version that genuinely looks like a mismatched suit. We would also be careful with very dark navies in low light, since they can disappear into black and leave you wondering why the outfit feels off.

The good news is that most people already own this outfit. A navy sweater and black trousers are two of the most common things in any wardrobe. Before buying anything here, try the two together with a black loafer. If you like it, add one navy accessory and see how much it changes.
