NYX Lip Gloss: Butter Gloss, Duck Plump and Jelly Job Picks

NYX Lip Gloss: Butter Gloss, Duck Plump and Jelly Job Picks

A nyx lip gloss can mean a soft Butter Gloss, a plumping Duck Plump or a glassy Jelly Job, and each does something different. Here is how I sort them, with glosses from other brands to compare.

NYX has been in the lip gloss business for a long time. When L'Oréal announced its agreement to acquire the brand in June 2014, the press release described NYX as a Los Angeles company created in 1999 by Toni Ko and named the Butter lip gloss line among its favorites. That line is still where I send anyone who asks me for a nyx lip gloss.

NYX describes the Butter Gloss as a soft, non-sticky, glossy gloss, and it comes in classic, bling and metallic finishes. The classic shades here carry names you could order at a bakery: Éclair, Madeleine, Fortune Cookie, Tiramisu, Praline and Brownie Drip. I like that the names give me a mood before the color does, and I would treat them as a menu. Pick one that sounds like something you would want tonight.

Butter Gloss Bling is the shimmer side of the line. Sugar Glass and Shimmer Down are the two in this grid, and they are the ones I would put over a plain lip when I want light to catch in the middle of my mouth.

A practical test: swipe two shades on the back of your hand and let them sit for a minute. The one that still looks good after you have moved your hand around is the one that will work when you talk and eat.

Big numbers collage titled NYX LIP GLOSS, six products numbered one to six with each product set beside its number: NYX Butter Gloss in Éclair, NYX Butter Gloss in Fortune Cookie, NYX Butter Gloss in Praline, NYX Butter Gloss Bling in Sugar Glass, NYX Jelly Job Gloss in Just Jelly and Outrageous Plump Lip Gloss in Universal Volume

Plump, jelly and stain, the other NYX glosses

If Butter Gloss is the comfortable one, the rest of NYX gloss is more specific. Duck Plump is the plumping gloss, with 21 high pigment shades including glitter holographic ones. Bangin Bare, Pick Me Pink and Twice the Spice are three to look at, and I would begin with the shade you already like in a lipstick.

Jelly Job is the one for a glassy, high-shine finish. NYX says it gives fuller, volumized looking lips, and Just Jelly, Jelly Filled and Jelly Kiss'd are three of the shade names. Lip I.V. is the stain of the group: a 12-hour hydrating gloss and liquid lip stain in 20 saturated shades. Red-y.Set.Wet and Drippin' In Rose are the two here.

A pairing I like is Lip I.V. first, since it is a stain, then a dab of Jelly Job on the center for shine. You get the color that stays and the gloss that catches light.

The plumping gloss is the one to test carefully. Put a little on your lower lip and wait a minute, so you know what to expect before you wear it all day.

What I would skip: layering Duck Plump over a stain on lips that feel chapped. Smooth them with a balm first, then gloss.

Glosses from other brands to compare

Sometimes I want a gloss that isn't NYX, and this grid is how I compare. The Outrageous Plump in 01 Universal Volume is a clear shimmer with sunflower seed, ginger root and peppermint oils, and the Hydrating Gloss Balm in 01 Pink Satin is a sheer baby pink with 13 percent shea butter. Both are named for what they do.

MAC Lipglass Air in Zephyr is clear, non-sticky and high shine. m.ph by Mary Phillips Top Coat in Pretty Please is a soft peach shimmer with peptides, made to layer over a lip pencil. Natasha Denona Hy-Gloss in Cherry Blossom is a natural nude pink gloss balm, and Make Up For Ever Super Boost in 01 Crystal is clear with hyaluronic acid and a minty, cooling plump. Armani Beauty Prisma Glass in 01 Clear Shine is crystal clear with 15 percent squalane, and Prada Reflection in U000 Universal is a sheer, clear liquid balm with a triangular tip.

A tip: if you like a gloss but not the tingle, choose the balm style ones. Natasha Denona and Prada both describe a cushiony feel.

What I would skip: a clear plumping gloss over a matte lipstick you have not tested. Do a trial at home first, since a cooling, minty gloss is a different sensation from a plain one.

Picking the gloss that fits your day

Choose the gloss by how you want your lips to feel. For comfort, start with Butter Gloss or a gloss balm. For a fuller look, Duck Plump, Jelly Job or a clear plumper. For color that stays after the shine wears off, the Lip I.V. stain. Keep one sheer gloss for every day and one bling shade for evenings, and stop there. Lip gloss looks best on smooth lips, so a little balm at night makes any of these look better in the morning. If you are between two shades, buy the one whose name you like better. That sounds silly, but you will use the one that makes you smile, and a gloss you use is the only kind that matters.
