Occasion Outfits: What to Wear to Any Event From Your Closet

Occasion Outfits: What to Wear to Any Event From Your Closet

Occasion outfits are where most of us overspend, buying something new for every dinner, wedding and gala. Phia groups the clothes you already own into collections like Night Out, Formal Gala and Spring, and builds complete outfits from them. Here is how to dress for the occasion from your own wardrobe first.

The jacket that broke the rules

In October 1886, at the first Autumn Ball at Tuxedo Park in New York, Griswold Lorillard and his friends showed up in tailless dress coats instead of full white tie and tails. Society columns were scandalized, and the jacket ended up named after the place. The tuxedo began, more or less, as someone wearing formal clothes the wrong way on purpose.

Confession #1: I have bought a new dress for nearly every wedding I have been to in the last five years, and I could not tell you where half of them are now. Occasion outfits are where my shopping discipline goes to die, because each event feels like it deserves something new.

Most of the time it does not. A night out, a gala, a garden party or a spring lunch can usually be answered from the closet, if you can see what is in it and someone suggests the combination.

Your closet, sorted by occasion

Phia sorts the clothes you already own into occasions for you. In the Collections tab, Suggested for You groups pieces from your digital closet into collections like Spring, Night Out, Formal Gala and Professional Power, eight items each. Save collection to keep one, or Not for me to dismiss it.

The closet behind it fills itself. Connect Gmail and Phia turns retailer order confirmations, receipts and shipping emails into closet items with photos. Instant camera roll sync adds clothes you have already photographed, and checkouts with the Phia extension land in the closet automatically.

You can also build your own occasion collections with a Category collection, grouping pieces by style, season or occasion. I keep one called Weddings, which has turned out to be a mildly embarrassing record of how many times I have worn the same green dress, and I am fine with that.

From collection to outfit

Collections tell you what to wear from. Outfits tell you what to wear together. In Phia's Outfits tab, Suggested outfits for you include named looks like Night Out, Garden Party, Evening Elegance and Soho Saturday, each built from your own clothes, and a tap saves any of them.

For a specific event, Style from one item is the most useful tool. Pick the piece you want to wear, the satin skirt or the velvet blazer, and Phia builds a complete outfit around it. Generate outfit builds several full looks from scratch if you want to see options.

A practical test for occasion outfits: before buying anything for an event, run Style from one item on the three dressiest pieces you own. If one of the results works, you just saved the cost of a new dress. What I would skip: buying for the photos. People remember how you looked, not whether they had seen the dress before.

Proof from real closets

The best argument for occasion outfits from your own closet is watching other people do it. Phia's ambassador spotlights show each outfit next to the matching pieces in the wearer's own digital closet, and you start to notice that the dressiest looks are often built around one or two pieces worn many times.

A great black blazer goes to dinner, to the office and to the gala with different shoes. A slip skirt is a garden party with a knit and a night out with a heel. That is the Tuxedo Park lesson, roughly: the occasion is set by how you wear it as much as what it is.

You can teach Phia your own dress codes too. Inside Style analysis, Styling rules lets you add up to ten rules you swear by, like gold or silver but never both, and Phia keeps them in mind when it suggests outfits.

When the occasion really is new

Sometimes an event really does need something you do not own, like a first black-tie invitation or a beach wedding in January. That is when Phia's shopping side helps. It compares prices across more than 220,000 sites, new and secondhand, and you can try a piece on virtually before you buy as a quick vibe check against the rest of your closet.

When you do buy, the piece lands in your closet and starts showing up in collections and outfits straight away, so it gets worn again instead of living in a garment bag.

To try it, download the free Phia app, connect Gmail and let the closet fill, then open the Collections tab. On a laptop, the Chrome extension handles price checks. For more on the whole closet, see How the Phia Digital Closet Works.
