Off Whites Are The Neutral That Reads As A Decision

Off Whites Are The Neutral That Reads As A Decision

Off-White built its identity on treating design as annotation, printing quotation marks and diagonal hazard stripes across ordinary streetwear shapes. That vocabulary spread through mall fashion within a few years, so the graphic tees and the trucker jacket here read as the source material rather than a copy. This edit follows the L/AB diffusion graphics through to the one true outerwear piece, the Half Arrow trucker.

The Grammar Of A Graphic

Virgil Abloh's central move was treating design as annotation: putting quotation marks around a word, labelling a thing as the thing, running diagonals across a surface as a hazard marking rather than as decoration. That turned clothing into a readable object and it spread so fast that within a few years every mall brand had borrowed the syntax. The reference was architecture and industrial signage rather than fashion, which is why it looked so unlike what surrounded it in 2013. The house has continued the language since, and the L/AB diffusion line is where most of the graphic work now sits.

Graphics And The Trucker

The L/AB cotton diagonal graphic crewneck t-shirt is the clearest statement of the house visual language in this set. The duct tape logo graphic tee, the active logo graphic crewneck shirt and the camo graphic logo crewneck t-shirt cover the rest of the diffusion graphics, and the ringer logo graphic camo jersey t-shirt is the most retro cut. From the main line, the Stroke skate short sleeve tee and Swimming Face skate graphic tee are the more illustrative pieces among these off whites picks. The Half Arrow trucker and the corduroy patch denim jacket are the heaviest layers, and the Off Stamp rib and Ablohland crepe dresses show the house at its quietest.

Pair it with

The house's own Out Of Office sneakers, a Jitney or Sandbag bag and paisley Susy jeans are the easiest way to extend the look. Cargo pants and a plain straight jean balance a loud graphic tee, since one statement per outfit is plenty. Keep the rest neutral and let the arrows and diagonals do the talking.

Our honest take

Heavy screen prints stiffen the front of a t-shirt and soften only after several washes, which is normal and is why a new graphic tee never hangs the way the photograph does. Wash inside out and skip the dryer to keep the print from cracking. Ringer cuts run shorter in the body than standard tees, which catches people out. Denim trucker jackets in this range are cut boxy and will not layer over a thick knit. If you take one thing away, the trucker is the piece with the longest life here and the graphics are the ones tied to a moment.
