Peace Out Pimple Patches: Acne Dots and Blemish Care

Peace Out Pimple Patches: Acne Dots and Blemish Care

Peace Out pimple patches are hydrocolloid acne dots, and the brand started with a founder, a drugstore aisle and a bandage. I go through the salicylic acid dots, the pore strips, and pimple patches from other brands.

How Peace Out found the dot

In 1962, a scientist named George Winter published a short paper in Nature about wounds on young domestic pigs. He covered some with an airtight film and left others to dry into a scab. The covered ones healed faster, because a moist, protected wound re-forms skin more quickly than a crusty one. It sounds obvious now. It changed how dressings are made, and it is why a hydrocolloid bandage exists at all.

Which brings us to a pimple. Peace Out's founder, Enrico Frezza, says on the brand's own page that he struggled for years with acne and hyperpigmentation, and while standing in a drugstore looking for something for a bad breakout, he discovered hydrocolloid wound dressings. He experimented, and the Peace Out Acne Dot was the result. In a Shopify interview he said he spent about three years researching and that it launched in July 2017. I like a peace out origin story that starts in an aisle, not a lab. The brand's line is to make peace with your skin, and the idea is honest: cover it, protect it, leave it alone.

The trick is to treat the first grid as a small kit, not a routine. The Salicylic Acid Acne Healing Dots are the classic, worn overnight over a spot that has come to a head. The Sheer Acne Day Dots are thinner, so they can go under makeup or a mask. The Oil-Absorbing Pore Treatment Strips are for the nose, and the Pore Perfecting Stick with glycolic and salicylic acid is a swipe-on option for the same area.

The rest of the brand goes a bit beyond blemishes. The Retinol Eye Stick and the Retinol 360° Eye Lift Patches are for the under-eye area, and the Daily Blemish Repairing Moisturizer and the Redness Reducing + Clarifying Facial Mist round out a small, sensible shelf.

Pimple patches from other brands

Here is the habit that makes any patch work better: apply it to clean, dry skin, and press it on with a finger for ten seconds. A patch stuck on moisturizer slides off by morning, and then you have done nothing but lose a small circle of plastic.

Starface made the pimple patch a fashion object. The Hydro-Star Clear and Hydro-Star Pink patches are star-shaped, and they are so cheerful that people stop hiding the spot and start wearing it. Sephora Collection's Quick Clear Patches are the plain round kind, good in a drawer or a bag. PanOxyl's Daytime Invisible Blemish Patches with salicylic acid are made for wearing out of the house.

Dr. Idriss's Patch It uses azelaic acid, which is the active people reach for when redness is the complaint, and rhode's Spotwear Hydrocolloid Patches are the ones for a friend who likes her skincare to look good on a nightstand. COSRX's AC Collection Acne Patch and the klog's Soft Shield Pimple Patch are the ordinary, dependable ones.

A pairing I like: a patch on the spot, a serum on everything around it. The patch covers, the serum treats, and you have not asked either one to do the other's job.

What I would skip: patching a spot that has not come to a head. A flat, deep bump has nothing to draw out, and a patch will not change that.

Blemish serums and treatments for acne-prone skin

Start with the active, not the brand. Salicylic acid goes into pores, azelaic acid calms redness, and retinol keeps the whole thing from starting again. Pick the one that matches the kind of breakout you actually have, and use it three nights a week before you increase.

For redness, azelaic acid is the gentle place to begin. Torriden's BALANCEFUL Azelaic Acid Blemish Serum and Anua's Azelaic Acid 10 Hyaluron Redness Soothing Serum are both serums, and COSRX's Azelaic Acid 10 B5 Redness Soothing Cream is the one that feels more like a moisturizer. The Ordinary's Salicylic Acid 2% Anhydrous Solution is a clear, plain, very effective option for clogged pores, and Fenty Beauty's Blemish Defeat'r BHA Spot-Targeting Gel is the one I would put in a bag for a single spot.

innisfree's Gentle Retinol + Salicylic Acid Acne Serum and Glow Recipe's Blackberry Retinol Blemish Serum add retinol to the mix, which is what you want if your breakouts come with texture and marks. Skinfix's acne+ adapinoid Gel with niacinamide and squalane is the softer end of the group.

A pairing I like: salicylic acid in the morning, azelaic acid at night. That is a lot of active for anyone, so I would begin with one.

What I would skip: retinol and a salicylic serum on the same night, unless a dermatologist has told you to. Skin that stings is not skin that is improving.

Gentle cleansers and moisturizers for blemish-prone skin

One rule for acne-prone skin: a cleanser should leave your face feeling clean and comfortable, never squeaky. Tight skin makes more oil, and more oil makes more work for the dots.

Arencia's Fresh Green Rice Mochi Foaming Cleanser and Anua's Heartleaf Quercetinol Pore Deep Cleansing Foam are the foamy ones. Tower 28's SOS Gentle Hydrating Gel Cleanser + Makeup Remover is the kind one, and it takes off makeup in the same step. Sephora Collection's Gentle Jelly Cleanser with Prebiotics and INNBEAUTY PROJECT's Keep It Clean Hydrating Gel Cleanser with Ceramides & 10 Amino Acids are the cushiony gel cleansers, good for mornings.

For moisturizers, Caudalie's Vinopure Oil-Control Moisturizer and banu's Deep Drench Lightweight Moisturizer are both made for skin that breaks out, and both stay light. Peace Out's own 2% Salicylic Acid Acne Gel Moisturizer For Oily Skin is the way to put the active into a step you already do.

A pairing I like: one of the gel cleansers at night, then your treatment, then the moisturizer. Keep the whole thing short.

What I would skip: a rich cream on a humid day when you are already shiny. Gel textures were made for that weather.

The dots I keep in the drawer

I think the pimple patch is the most honest product in skincare, because it does not promise a transformation. It covers a spot, protects it and gets out of the way. That is a small idea, and it started with a pig, a scientist and a drugstore aisle.

So I would buy one box of Peace Out dots, one patch from another brand for daytime, and one gentle cleanser. Add a single active when you are ready. Peace out to the ten-step panic, and hello to one spot, one patch and a full night's sleep. If you want to keep browsing, I also put together CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser and Acne Safe Moisturizer.
