Pink and Burgundy Outfits

Pink and burgundy, two shades of the same idea. Soft pink knits and coats, burgundy leather and cashmere, and shoes and bags to tie them together.

Pink and burgundy sounds sweet on paper, but in person it looks grown-up and a little moody. They're two shades of the same color family, so they never clash. Think of a faded rose in a dark red vase.

Pink is the softer half, so I like it in cozy textures. &Daughter's Tahra sweater is a pale pink V-neck in cashmere and cotton, and Guest In Residence's Grizzly cardigan is a fluffy cashmere with buttons down the front. Simkhai's Twila cashmere polo is $325 and short-sleeved. Pink also looks lovely with gray, so if you're nervous, try a pink sweater with gray trousers first and add burgundy shoes.

For something bigger, Ulla Johnson's Fernanda coat is a belted blush wool, and McQueen's wool blazer is a dusty rose that would look lovely over a burgundy knit. Cecilie Bahnsen's Floria dress is pale pink cloqué, and Abadia's draped jersey blouse is a brighter pink at $550. Solace London's Seri gown is strapless and pale, for an evening out. The McQueen blazer with jeans and burgundy boots is the outfit I'd try first.

Keep the pink soft and chalky. Bright bubblegum pink next to burgundy can start to look like Valentine's Day.

Burgundy is the anchor. It does the job black usually does, but it looks warmer and richer next to pink.

Arma's Paula leather jacket is a deep burgundy with a high collar, and it's the piece I'd build this whole story around. Gabriela Hearst's Tenes dress is a ribbed cashmere and silk knit with a belt, and Sanderlak's tie-detailed satin jacket wraps like a robe.

For knits, Nili Lotan's Feron sweater is a simple cashmere V-neck, and Victoria Beckham's Lana sweater is a relaxed crew at $690. Frame's Gillian blouse has gathered puff sleeves, and Rick Owens's Edfu skirt is draped and asymmetric. Simkhai's Montgomery dress is sheer burgundy organza with a belt at $387.

A pink sweater with burgundy pants, or a burgundy jacket over a pink dress, is the easiest way in.

Texture helps the two colors work together. Burgundy leather next to a fluffy pink knit looks rich, while two flat fabrics in the same finish can look a bit too matched.

Shoes and bags are where the two colors can swap places. Burgundy boots with a pink coat, or a pink shoe with a burgundy dress.

Jimmy Choo's Amis 35 boots are burgundy suede to the knee on a small heel, and Mansur Gavriel's Ruched loafer comes in oxblood. A burgundy loafer with a pink sweater and jeans is the easiest weekend version. For pink, MM6 Maison Margiela's ballet flats are a soft rose leather with a bow, and Manolo Blahnik's BB 90 pumps are hot pink tulle and satin for a party.

For bags, Khaite's Simona shoulder bag is oxblood crackle patent, long and slim. DeMellier's Vancouver is a structured burgundy shoulder bag at $560, and Mansur Gavriel's Gaia bag is claret at $445. Rue de Verneuil's Club tote is a roomy flannel with leather trim.

If your outfit is mostly pink, go burgundy on the bag. It keeps the whole look from getting too sweet.

Our honest take

Pink and burgundy is more wearable than it sounds, and it's a nice change from the usual fall browns and blacks.

What I'd skip: pink and burgundy in the same shiny fabric, which can look like a bridesmaid lineup, and neon pink, which fights the depth of burgundy. I'd also skip buying both colors at once if you already own a burgundy sweater. Start with what's in your closet. Burgundy nail polish counts too, if you want the smallest possible start.

If you take one thing away, it's this: pair one soft pink piece with one deep burgundy piece and keep everything else neutral. Gray, cream or camel around them lets the two shades look intentional.
