Preppy nails borrow from Ivy League closets: gingham, polka dots, bows and pastel French tips. These are the press-ons and pastel polishes that get you there.
Preppy Nails, from Gingham to Pastel French

Borrowed from the Closet
I could not find one person or one viral video that started preppy nails, and I would rather say so than invent a story. What the sources agree on is the direction. Glam was already collecting preppy nail designs in January 2024, and the look grew out of preppy clothing, meaning plaid skirts, knit sweaters and argyle, translated into nail art.
Then it picked up speed. InStyle said in January 2026 that the patterned manicure trend grew out of a polka-dot explosion in summer 2025, and that plaid returned on the runways at Ralph Lauren and Bottega Veneta. Vogue Adria says plaid nails took over feeds at the end of 2025. Elite Daily even quoted OPI's Lia Smith on "Ralph Lauren Christmas" nails in red tartan, so it has a TikTok home aesthetic too.
The result: clean, classic designs like plaid, gingham, checks, stripes, polka dots, bows and pastel or milky French tips, usually on short to medium nails. The collage below shows pastel pink, blue and green solids, blue and pink gingham, a white nail with a pink bow, navy stripes, pink dots and two pastel French tips.
The first grid is press-ons and gel strips with the patterns already on them. The second is pastel polishes in pink, blue and green.
Here is a test I like: choose one accent nail for the pattern and keep the rest solid. Byrdie's advice is the same for complicated designs, and it stops the look from becoming a costume.

Preppy Press-Ons and Gel Strips
Gingham first. Chillhouse's Checked Out has a blue and white check, and Dashing Diva has a Checked Out of its own with lilac gingham on French tips over a nude base. Chillhouse's Til Dot Do Us Part pairs white dots on nude with white tips. ohora's N Polka Blanc goes the same way with white dots on a natural nude tone, and the brand says it comes in an upgraded size developed from US customer data.
For color, Dashing Diva's Pastel Baby has multicolor pastel French tips on a light nude gel strip, and Pish Posh is a short, round set in soft pastel blue. Dashing Diva describes Pastel Baby as semi-cured gel with mega volume and high shine, so the tips are the whole point.
Olive & June has the bows. Take A Bow Puffy French is a French manicure with the bow from Avery Woods's collaboration with the brand, a design taken from her own bow tattoo, and the photo shows white with lilac bows. Pink Paradise French is a short round French, and the photo shows a white base with a hot-pink tip.
Here is a pairing I like: keep the bow and dots for your ring finger, and put a solid pastel on the rest.
What I would skip: any set with two or three patterns in one hand unless you are going for a very loud look. The dots, checks and bows are best treated as one idea per set. Chillhouse's kits come with 30 nails, a buffer and file, a cuticle stick and gentle glue, so you will have spares to test sizes.

Pastel Preppy Polishes
Pastel solids are the easiest way in. Olive & June names its shades like a summer camp menu. Shades of Seersucker is a preppy periwinkle, the ideal summer blue in the brand's words, and a soft blue creme in the photo. Cucumber Sandwich is a cool green, Minty is a sweet pastel mint, and Saltwater Taffy is a sheer, sweet pink.
JINsoon has two that lean toward the dreamy. Whisper is a soft, translucent jelly rose with a hint of blush, and Charm is a light pastel green tinged with mint, which the brand describes as sweet and soothing.
Chillhouse's Baby Tee is a mint green and Bebe Rosa is a bubblegum pastel pink. Both are part of the Forever Wear system, a two-step, gel-like polish that needs no UV lamp. You pair the color with the Magic Finish Top Coat, and Chillhouse says it resists chips, peels and scratches. Note that it only ships within the U.S.
The simplest way to use all these together: pick one pink, one blue and one green, and alternate them across your fingers. It looks like a row of ribbons.
Here is a trick I like: paint a pastel on every nail but one, and make that one a white French. It reads as a set instead of a mistake.
What I would skip: the most translucent pinks, Whisper and Saltwater Taffy, if you want opaque color in one coat. Those are meant to look sheer.

One Idea Per Hand
I think preppy nails are at their best when they look like a decision rather than a costume. Gingham on one finger, a pale pink on the others, a glossy top coat, and you are done.
My rule of thumb is short nails, soft colors, one pattern. Wear the bow when you want to smile at your hands, and wear plain pastels when you would rather not think about it at all.
If you are unsure, start with the polishes. Pink, blue and green go with denim, knits and loafers, and you can add a pattern later.
