Press On Toenails, the Newest Chapter in a 1950s Nail Idea

Press on toenails are the new pedicure shortcut, built on fake nail ideas that go back to the 1950s. Here are eight toenail sets, with glue and without, and eight prep and aftercare picks that make them last.

From a Dentist's Plastic to Your Toes

Fake nails are older than most people think. In 1954, Life magazine described the Patti-Nail, made by a Philadelphia dentist from a plastic he first met as a tooth filling. Lee Press-On Nails arrived in drugstores in April 1985, and KISS began in 1989 as a small startup in Flushing, New York, founded by John Y. Chang, Sung Yong Chang and Won Shik Kang. In 2012 KISS introduced imPRESS, the press-on manicure with adhesive already on each nail.

Press on toenails came much later. In a July 2025 story in The Zoe Report, Evelyn Lim, chief educator at MiniLuxe's Paintbox studio, called them a fairly new concept, and said people still assume they are uncomfortable or hard to wear with shoes. The appeal is easy to see. They come shaped and polished, there is no drying time, and imPRESS says its pedicure kits come with 24 nails in 12 sizes. The Zoe Report also quotes manicurist Gina Edwards, a KISS ambassador, saying imPRESS toenails can last up to 10 days.

The catch is shoes. imPRESS recommends open-toe shoes or sandals for the best wear, and a manicurist told The Zoe Report that press-ons that are too long or poorly fitted can bunch up in closed shoes and damage your own nails.

The first grid is eight toenail sets, from KISS and Glamnetic, with glue and without. The second grid is the prep and aftercare that make them last. My tip: if you are between sizes, the imPRESS guide says to choose the smaller one, since it looks more natural and stays on longer.

Eight Press-On Toenail Sets, Glue and No Glue

Kiss Core French Press-On Toenails in a short squoval are the most reviewed set here, 26 white French tips with glue included. They are the easiest place to start, because a French tip hides small fitting mistakes. The Kiss Core Color set is the same shape in a solid shade, and Kiss Glam Embellished adds shimmer and chrome for a vacation.

The imPRESS sets use adhesive tabs, so no glue. The imPRESS Press On Toenails are a soft white French, the Impress Color set in Bloomi is a solid pink, and the Impress Design set in Sweet Life is pastel pink with a little red cherry, and it shares the top rating in this grid. Tabs are faster and gentler to remove, but glue holds longer.

Glamnetic Ma Damn Pedi is a high-gloss French set with 30 nails in 15 sizes, a good choice if your toes are hard to fit. Kiss Professional Full Cover is the bulk pick, 130 plain white nails in 12 sizes, enough for several pedicures and a blank base for your own polish.

What I would skip: long nails on your toes. Keep them short and squoval, so they do not catch in socks, sheets or shoes.

Eight Pedicure Prep and Aftercare Picks

Kiss PowerFlex Maximum Speed Nail Glue is the most reviewed product in this edit, a fast glue that sets in about three seconds. Use a small drop on the press-on, not on your nail. Glamnetic Brush On Nail Glue is easier to control, since you paint a thin layer instead of squeezing.

Prep is where a pedicure lasts or fails. The Flowery Foot File has a coarse side for calluses and a smooth side to buff, and the Sally Hansen Jelly Toe-Spacer keeps toes apart while you work, though its rating is the lowest here. Push back cuticles and wipe each nail with the prep pad before anything else.

Aftercare keeps the skin around the nails looking good. The Nourishing Foot Mask in Coconut and Lavender is a pair of soft booties for tired feet, best the night before, not after. L'Occitane Karité Confort Foot Cream softens dry heels, and L'Occitane Strengthening Shea Nail and Cuticle Oil is a tiny bottle with 30 percent shea oil and one of the best-rated picks here. Caudalie Hand and Nail Cream is rich and full of antioxidants, for hands and feet alike.

What I would skip: oil or cream on your nails right before you apply. Keep it for the skin around them, or the adhesive will slide.

Short, Squoval and in Sandals

I think press on toenails are one of the better beauty shortcuts right now, as long as you keep them short and wear them with sandals. Start with a Kiss Core French set and glue if you want them to last, or imPRESS tabs if you want them off in a minute. Clean, file and wipe each nail first, press for 30 seconds, and wait an hour before a shower. Then keep cuticle oil by your bed and a small file in your beach bag.
