Rainy Day Fall Outfits That Still Look Good

Rainy Day Fall Outfits That Still Look Good

Gray skies are a good reason to dress up, not down. These are the trench coats, boots, knits and bags I reach for on a wet day.

I used to treat rainy days as a reason to give up on getting dressed. Now I treat them as a chance to wear the coat I have been saving.

The trench is the answer. The Michael Kors Collection perforated suede trench in nude is the dreamy one for a light drizzle, and the Max Mara wool-blend trench has a print that looks great against gray streets. The Róhe cotton cape trench in red is for a day when you want the whole sidewalk to look at you, and the Sanderlak belted leather trench is the moody one.

Ankle Boots

A good ankle boot is the foundation of a rainy day outfit. Look for a sole with some grip and a shape that works under a long coat.

The Bottega Veneta Lug boot is the chunky one that gets through puddles with attitude, and the Black Suede Studio Aries is the sleeker option. The Khaite Clive suede boot in brown and the UGG Classic Ultra Mini in tan are the softer ones, best for a dry day after the rain. Check the care label before you wear suede out in a storm.

Turtlenecks and Mock Necks

A turtleneck keeps the wind off your neck and makes a coat look intentional. It is also the best thing to wear under a trench.

The Max Mara wool rib-knit mock-neck in brown is the sensible one, and the TWP cable-knit cashmere turtleneck in purple is the cozy one. The SLOAN satin turtleneck adds a little shine to a dull day, and the Ulla Johnson Camille turtleneck in light grey is the one with the pretty sleeves.

Shoulder Bags

A shoulder bag keeps your hands free for an umbrella, and that is half the battle.

The Lemaire belted baguette in brown and The Row Elise in black are the ones I would carry out the door without a second thought. The Ferragamo Hug is the one with structure, and the Jacquemus Petit Bisou in red is a bright spot on a gray day. What I would skip is anything so delicate you worry about it in the rain.

Let It Pour

A trench, a boot with some grip, a warm knit and a bag that holds everything. Wet weather is a lot more fun when your outfit does the work.

If this is the kind of week you are dressing for, I would also read my notes on long coat outfits, first day of fall outfits, weekend errands outfits and apple picking outfits.
