Rare Beauty Highlighter: Every Glow Shade I Would Pick

The Rare Beauty highlighter range started with a liquid luminizer in eight shades and has grown into powders, brighteners and glossy cheek and lip companions. Here are the shades I would pick, the Rare Beauty pieces that carry the glow further, and highlighters from other brands to compare.

Rare Beauty came out on September 3, 2020, and the Positive Light Liquid Luminizer was in that very first lineup, in eight shades. Selena Gomez built the brand around the idea that makeup should not chase perfection, and that mission shows up in how the products behave. Nothing here is trying to sculpt you into someone else. The Rare Beauty highlighter is a good example: it adds light and leaves your face looking like your face.

Start with the liquid. Rare Beauty describes it as a silky, second skin highlighter with light-reflecting pearl particles and a botanical blend of lotus, gardenia and white waterlily. Enlighten is the champagne, Exhilarate is champagne gold, Transcend is rose gold, and Reveal is copper. Mesmerize is a rose bronze and is listed as Selena's go-to shade. Dot it on with the doe-foot applicator, or mix a drop into foundation.

The powder is the Silky Touch Highlighter. It is made of half pearl microshimmers in a semi-sheer base, and Rare Beauty asks you to handle it gently, which I find charming and also good advice. Enlighten is a cool champagne, Flaunt is a true gold, and Reveal is a warm copper. A small tapered brush keeps it on the cheekbone instead of the whole cheek.

A quick test: put one dot of liquid on the back of your hand in daylight. If it looks like skin with a wet shine, you have your shade.

Big numbers collage titled RARE BEAUTY HIGHLIGHTER, six products numbered one to six with each product set beside its number: Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer in Enlighten, Rare Beauty Silky Touch Highlighter in Flaunt, Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer in Reveal, Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer in Mesmerize, Rare Beauty Under Eye Brightener in Light and Charlotte Tilbury Highlighter Wand in Pillow Talk

The rest of the Rare Beauty glow kit

Rare Beauty does not stop at a highlighter, and the rest of the glow kit is where the brand gets fun. The Positive Light Under Eye Brightener is a light liquid with a cool-tip metal applicator. Light has neutral undertones for fair to light complexions, and Light Medium has pink undertones for light to medium. Wear it alone or layer it over concealer.

For the lips there are two Positive Light Luminizing Lip Glosses. Dazzle is a sheer blue with multicolored shimmer, and Beam is a peachy coral with gold and pink pearl. Rare Beauty calls the formula cushiony and nonsticky, with a subtle peach scent. Wear it solo or over lipstick.

The Soft Pinch Luminous Powder Blush brings the glow to the apples of the cheeks. Cheer is a light warm pink, made as Selena's custom shade, and Hope is a nude mauve. Tap it on with the Soft Pinch Blush Brush, then add highlighter above it.

The Positive Light Precision Highlighter Brush is small, tapered and synthetic, and it is the tool I would buy first if powder highlighters usually end up everywhere. Another Silky Touch shade sits here too: Exhilarate, a champagne gold.

What I would skip: the brightener as a replacement for a full concealer when you want heavy coverage. It is sheer by design, so treat it as the finishing touch.

Highlighters from other brands, for comparison

A Rare Beauty highlighter is easier to judge next to a few other formulas, so here are the ones I like to reach for. Fenty Beauty Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Ginger Binge and Moscow Mule is a duo: a soft copper sheen on one side for day and supercharged copper shimmer on the other for night. Saie Glowy Super Gel in Beachglow is a soft golden bronze liquid you can wear under makeup or alone. Charlotte Tilbury Highlighter Wand in Pillow Talk is a soft rose gold gel that doubles as a blush.

Dior Forever Glow Maximizer in 011 Pink is a luminous pink liquid that can be a highlighter, a blush or a touch on the eyelids. Benefit Glow La La in Luna is a baked powder with a glass-like gleam, and the brand says it wears for 12 hours. Westman Atelier Lit Up Glassy Gel Stick in Pärla is an oyster pearl that can go near the tear ducts to brighten.

rhode Highlight Milk in 03 is a pearly warm bronze you press into your hands and then onto face, neck and chest. MERIT Day Glow Dewy Highlighting Balm in Solstice is a neutral bronze stick with zero sparkle, made for daytime.

What I would skip: a shimmery powder over dry patches. Go with a balm, a gel or a liquid instead, then set it lightly.

Choosing your glow

Choose by finish first. If you want a wet, skin-like shine, the Rare Beauty liquid in your undertone or a gel like MERIT or Saie is where I would begin. If you want a more polished cheekbone, go for a powder such as Silky Touch or Benefit Glow La La. Warm skin tends to like Flaunt, Reveal or Mesmerize, cooler skin likes Enlighten or Transcend, and there is no rule that stops you from mixing two. Apply highlighter last, only on the high points, and stand by a window before you add more. Use the Rare Beauty blush and lip gloss to echo the same glow, and keep a small brush nearby so a little goes exactly where you want it.
