Rhode Blush: Pocket Blush Shades and Dewy Balms to Pair

Rhode Blush: Pocket Blush Shades and Dewy Balms to Pair

The rhode blush that started a small-sized flush habit is the Pocket Blush, a cream you carry in your bag and tap on with a finger. Here are the shades I would look at first, plus the dewy balms and sheer tints that sit next to it.

Pocket Blush arrived on June 20, 2024, less than two years after Hailey Bieber launched rhode in 2022, and it was the brand's step from peptide skincare and lip treatments into blush. Bieber teased it for weeks with the caption "Put me in your pocket," and the little size is the whole point. A rhode blush is meant to live in a coat pocket or a bag and come out on the way to somewhere.

The formula, according to the brand, is a lightweight cream blush that wakes up cheeks and lips with a satiny, diffused flush. It melts on smoothly, hydrates and leaves a glowy finish without a greasy feel. Date Cake is a warm red berry with a satin finish. Teacup, Piggy, Juice Box, Sprinkle, Spicy Marg, Plum and Tan Line are the other shades here, and the names alone tell you they run from playful to deep. Piggy and Juice Box are the two I would try first if you like a color that shows up.

I tap it on with a fingertip instead of swiping, because a tap keeps the edge soft. The same shade dotted lightly on the lips makes a matching flush that looks planned without trying hard.

A quick test: put a dot on the back of your hand and blend it out. If you can still see a clear line of color, go lighter on the cheek.

Dewy balms to pair with it

Balms sit right beside a Pocket Blush, because they use the same finger-and-go habit. Haus Labs Color Fuse Glassy Balm Stick in Glassy Pomelo is a peach pink for lips and cheeks with fermented arnica and goji berry complex. Tower 28 BeachPlease Lip and Cheek Cream Blush in Office Hours is a sun-kissed mauve that is non-comedogenic and made for sensitive skin. Iris&Romeo Ceramide Multi-Balm in Warm Flush is a tawny brown with ceramides and mango butter, which I would try on deeper skin. MAKEUP BY MARIO Jelly Jar in Mauve Latte is a rosy mauve in a bouncy, jelly-like formula.

Tower 28 BeachPlease Luminous Tinted Balm in Magic Hour, REL Beauty Hydrating Cream Blush in Jtt and Rose Inc Cream Blush Refillable Cheek and Lip Color are here too, and I would check the shade in person on each. Summer Fridays Blush Butter Balm in Pink Sunset is a warm peachy pink with ceramides, peptides and three butters.

Pairing tip: use a bolder Pocket Blush shade on the apples of the cheeks and a mauve or peach balm on the lips, so the two do not compete.

What I would skip: layering a rich balm over a powder that has already set. It can shift the powder, so put the balm on first, then the powder.

Sheer tints for a barely-there flush

Some days a blush feels like too much, and a sheer tint is the answer. fel beauty Kissylips in Crush is a warm berry balm with a high shine and buildable sheer to medium color. Kaja Dewy Bar in Strawberry Sorbet is a true pink for cheeks and lips. MAKEUP BY MARIO Jelly Jar in Cherry Pie is a bright neutral red in the same bouncy formula as Mauve Latte. Jillian Dempsey Cheek Tint in Poppy is a peach tint inspired by a discontinued powder blush the makeup artist found in London years ago. Mango People Mango Cream Blush and Lip Multistick in Cherry is a deep burgundy red with mango butter and ashwagandha. caliray Socal Superbloom in Heat Wave is a sheer warmer pink stain tint that the brand says is transfer proof. NUDESTIX Stax All Over Color Blush Balm in Pink Love and the 19/99 Beauty tint in Parna are the two I would swatch before choosing.

How to wear it: dab a tint on the cheeks, press with a fingertip, then dab a little on the lips.

What I would skip: a burgundy like Cherry on very sheer skin in a hurry. Start with half a dab or choose a lighter pink like Strawberry Sorbet.

Building your pocket kit

To build a small kit, choose one Pocket Blush for a real hit of color, one balm for lips and cheeks, and one sheer tint for the mornings you want almost nothing. Match the depth to your skin: warm red berry and plum shades work on deeper skin, and pinks and peaches suit lighter tones. Keep them in a coat pocket, not a drawer, because the point is to reach for them in the elevator. Tap, blend until the edge is gone, and go lighter than you think. You can always add a second layer, but taking color off a cheek is harder than it sounds.
