Salomon

Salomon

Salomon was founded in 1947 in Annecy, France, by François Salomon, who began by making wood saw blades and steel ski edges with his wife and son Georges in a small workshop. Georges pushed the company toward skiing specifically, patenting safety bindings and eventually the first rear-entry ski boot, and that same engineering-first approach now defines the trail and outdoor shoes the brand is known for.

Shoes

Salomon's footwear descends directly from a company that spent decades solving ski-binding problems before it ever made a shoe, and that mechanical, safety-first mindset carried over when it moved into hiking and trail running in the early 1990s. The XA Pro, launched in 2002, became a genuine reference point in adventure footwear, and the design logic on this wall traces back to it. This is gear built by people who cared more about function than fashion, until fashion caught up to them.

More Shoes

A second wall of shoes shows how far Salomon has stretched its trail-running technology into more everyday silhouettes, still carrying the visible overlays and structured lacing systems that came out of its ski-boot engineering. The brand only entered summer sports with hiking shoes in 1992, decades after it was already the world's top ski-binding maker. It is worth remembering these are descended from bindings and boots, not sneakers.

Our honest take

Salomon's credibility comes from seventy-plus years of solving actual mechanical problems in the French Alps, not from a fashion studio deciding trail shoes looked good. That history is exactly why the shoes hold up under real use rather than just on a sidewalk. The brand's recent crossover into style circles works because the technical bones underneath are genuinely earned.
