SEEN Shampoo, the Dermatologist's Fix for Hairline Breakouts

SEEN Shampoo, the Dermatologist's Fix for Hairline Breakouts

SEEN shampoo was created by a Harvard-trained dermatologist who traced her own breakouts to her hair care. Here are eight SEEN formulas, plus eight gentle, fragrance-free and sensitive-skin shampoos to compare.

Hair Care That Doubles as Skincare

In 2014 Dr. Iris Rubin, a Harvard-trained dermatologist, started breaking out. Beauty Independent tells what happened next: she traced the acne to her own hair care products. She could not find a shampoo that worked well without causing the problem, so she spent about four years developing one. SEEN launched in 2018 with three products, a shampoo, a conditioner and a blowout creme.

The idea is hair care that doubles as skincare. Every SEEN product is non-comedogenic, meaning tested so it does not clog pores, and put through repeat insult patch testing for irritation, according to a profile on Skincare.com. The formulas skip sulfates, silicones, parabens, dyes and phthalates.

If you have ever had breakouts along your hairline, jaw, back or shoulders that do not respond to skincare, this is worth thinking about. Shampoo and conditioner rinse over all of those places every time you shower.

SEEN shampoo also comes in fragrance-free versions, which the company says carry the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance.

The first grid is eight SEEN products, scented and fragrance-free. The second is eight other gentle shampoos for sensitive skin and scalps.

My tip for anyone with body or hairline breakouts: rinse your conditioner with your head tipped forward, then wash your face and body last. It keeps residue off your skin.

Eight SEEN Formulas, With and Without Fragrance

SEEN Shampoo is the one to start with. It lathers well, rinses easily, and does not leave hair or scalp feeling stripped. The Fragrance Free version is the same idea without scent, and it is the one I would choose for sensitive or eczema-prone skin.

SEEN Conditioner is lightweight, made to detangle and soften while cutting frizz and breakage, and it also comes fragrance-free. SEEN Deeper Conditioner is richer, for dry or damaged hair, and it too comes scented or fragrance-free. The brand says it is safe for sensitive and acne-prone skin, which is the point of the whole line.

SEEN Scalp Clarifying Shampoo is dermatologist-designed to deeply but gently clean the scalp and lift buildup and excess oil. Use it once a week if you use dry shampoo or a lot of styling products, since buildup on the scalp is its own source of trouble.

The last one is the SEEN Blow-Out Creme, one of the brand's three original products. It gives body, bounce and shine, and the brand says it protects against UV and heat. It is the rare styler I would call skin-friendly, which matters because it stays on your hair and near your face all day.

What I would skip: the Deeper Conditioner on fine hair. The regular Conditioner is light enough for daily use and will not weigh fine strands down.

Eight Gentle Shampoos to Compare

If the first grid is not quite right for you, these are the gentle shampoos I would look at next.

Nécessaire The Shampoo is a scalp cleanse with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, and its product page calls it non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic and fragrance-free. It is the closest match to the first grid, and a good option for a thinning or itchy scalp. Nécessaire The Moisture Shampoo is for dry hair, with argan oil, and The Detox Shampoo is a weekly deep clean for buildup.

Briogeo's Be Gentle, Be Kind Aloe + Oat Milk Shampoo is fragrance-free and hypoallergenic, and it is soft enough for a reactive scalp. CeraVe Gentle Hydrating Shampoo was made with dermatologists for balanced to dry scalps, and CeraVe Oil Control Balancing Shampoo is the pick for oily scalps.

Vanicream Shampoo for Sensitive Skin is unscented and non-medicated, a longtime option for very sensitive skin. Odele Ultra Sensitive Shampoo is fragrance-free and made for sensitive or eczema-prone skin.

A test that helps: switch only your shampoo and conditioner for four weeks and keep the rest of your routine the same. If hairline or back breakouts calm down, you have your answer.

What I would skip: scented formulas if fragrance is what bothers your skin. Nécessaire The Shampoo, Briogeo Be Gentle, Vanicream and Odele are all fragrance-free.

Watch Your Hairline

I think SEEN shampoo is one of the smartest ideas in hair care, because it starts from the skin. Dr. Rubin was solving her own breakouts, and the line still feels built by someone who understands what rinses off your hair and onto your face. Start with the shampoo and conditioner in the scented or fragrance-free version, give it four weeks, and watch your hairline. It is a small change that might fix something your skincare could not.
