Silvia Tcherassi

Silvia Tcherassi

Silvia Tcherassi trained as an interior designer in her native Barranquilla, Colombia before a leather-appliqued T-shirt she made for herself caught a shopkeeper's eye on a trip to Aruba, and the orders that followed pushed her into fashion. She founded her company in 1990, opened her first boutique in Barranquilla in 1992, and later became the first Latin American designer to show during official Paris Fashion Week programming.

Dresses

Dresses carry the vocabulary Silvia Tcherassi has been refining since she left interior design for fashion in the late 1980s, color and drape worked out the way she once dyed fabric with tea when Colombian textiles could not give her the exact shade she wanted. The house has called this philosophy effortless elegance since her 2010 book of the same name. It shows up most plainly in occasion dressing.

More Dresses

A second grid of dresses reflects a brand built almost entirely around statement eveningwear since Tcherassi's first Colombiamoda show in 1992, in Medellín. Fabric development happens in Como, Italy, while the garments themselves are still produced at her own facility in Colombia. That split, Italian textiles and Colombian construction, has been part of the operation for decades.

Tops and shirting

Tops are a lower-key entry point into a house whose reputation was built on eveningwear and one very memorable, hand-appliqued T-shirt that started the whole business back in the late 1980s. The prints and color work still trace back to Tcherassi's early habit of hand-treating fabric until it behaved the way she wanted. It is a good place to see the brand's color sense without the drama of a full gown.

Skirts

Skirts sit further from Tcherassi's original eveningwear instincts, closer to the everyday pieces her Miami base, established in the late 1990s, eventually demanded once her clientele stopped being purely occasion-driven. The Colombian production line still handles the construction, keeping the category tied to the house's roots even as the silhouettes get more casual. It rounds out a brand people mostly associate with gowns.

Trousers and shorts

Trousers and shorts are the most conventional part of a house that made its name on ruffles, color and drama, evidence of how far Tcherassi's business has grown since her first Barranquilla boutique in 1992. They are produced through the same Colombian manufacturing operation as everything else here. Not the reason to shop this label, but a reasonable way to round out an order.

More from the collection

What collects here is largely accessories and smaller categories, the parts of the business that grew once Tcherassi's brand expanded past ready-to-wear into hotels, home goods and eventually a sustainable accessories line launched during Paris Fashion Week in 2020. It shows a designer who has kept diversifying for three decades without ever fully leaving fashion behind. Worth a look for anyone who only knows the gowns.

Our honest take

Silvia Tcherassi's story holds up under scrutiny, a self-taught, tea-dyeing designer from Barranquilla who became the first Latin American name on the official Paris Fashion Week calendar, and that trajectory still shows in the color and drape of her dresses. The rest of the assortment is competent but plays a supporting role to that eveningwear reputation. Shop the dresses first, everything else is a bonus.
