Sixteen Makeup Ideas, and Where the Word Makeup Came From

Sixteen Makeup Ideas, and Where the Word Makeup Came From

These makeup ideas run from a one-stick flush to a matte red lip and a glitter liner, and none of them needs a tutorial. Here are sixteen products to try them with, eight for every day and eight for a night out.

A Theater Word Goes Everyday

Before 1920, make-up was a theater word. Max Factor's own heritage page credits him with inventing the word make-up that year, when he introduced Society Make-up so ordinary women could copy the looks they saw on film stars. Smithsonian Magazine puts it simply: he coined the noun from the phrase to make up one's face. Theater people already used the word, but Factor took it out of the dressing room and put it on a counter. He later wrote the entry on make-up for the 14th edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, which tells you how quickly the word became respectable.

I like that origin because it treats makeup as something you do, not something you own. You learn a face by trying one step, keeping what works and dropping what does not.

So these makeup ideas are small steps. Each one uses a single product, and none of them needs a tutorial. Try a cream color on your cheeks and lips from the same stick. Try a wing with a stamp instead of freehand. Try a glossy brown lip, a matte red one, or a line of glitter on the lid for a night out.

The first grid is the everyday ideas: blush, gloss, mascara, a cream shadow stick, a liquid glow and a bronzer stick. The second grid is the statement ideas, from a wing stamp to a red lipstick and a full palette. My tip: change one thing at a time, so you learn what actually works on your face.

Everyday Ideas, One Product Each

Idea one is a single stick for cheeks and lips. ILIA Multi-Stick in In the Mood is a sheer, creamy wash of color with shea butter and avocado oil, and you tap it on with a finger. Saie Dew Blush in Flirty is the liquid version, dewy and buildable with a chunky doe-foot applicator.

Idea two is glow. Saie Glowy Super Gel in Beachglow is a sheer liquid illuminator you can wear under makeup, mix in or wear alone. Rare Beauty Warm Wishes in Power Boost is a cream bronzer stick that melts in, so you can warm up the whole face in one swipe.

Idea three is a quick eye. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick in Bellini is waterproof and lasts up to 24 hours, and it goes on with a fingertip in seconds. Lancôme Lash Idôle is a curved-wand mascara that lifts and fans out lashes without clumps.

Idea four is the lip. MERIT Shade Slick in Marrakech is a tinted lip oil with a wash of color and high shine. Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb in Hot Chocolit is the most reviewed product in this edit, a deep brown version of the universal gloss with an XXL wand and a peach-vanilla scent.

What I would skip: trying all four ideas on the same morning. Pick the cheek stick and a lip, or the shadow stick and mascara, and let one part of the face lead.

Statement Ideas for a Night Out

These are the statement ideas, for a dinner or a night out. Kaja Wink Stamp is the easiest wing I know, a waterproof stamp on one end and a felt-tip pen on the other, so you stamp the shape and connect it. Urban Decay Moondust in Space Cowboy is a liquid glitter liner that dries fast with no glitter glue needed. Armani Beauty Eye Tint in 80M Mauve is a crease-proof liquid shadow with up to 16 hours of wear and no primer required.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam is the palette for when you want to build a full smoky eye, with 14 ultra-matte, duo chrome and metallic shades and a large mirror.

For the lip, Valentino Spike in Fire Red is a buttery matte red with vivid color in one stroke. Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat in Pillow Talk Fair is the liner I would use under it, or on its own with gloss, and it lasts up to six hours without feathering.

HUDA BEAUTY Blush Filter in Strawberry Cream is a liquid blush with micro-pearls and a candy scent. Fenty Beauty Killawatt is a cream-powder highlighter duo for the cheekbones and the inner corners of the eyes.

What I would skip: a red lip and a glitter liner together. Choose one statement and keep everything else soft, which is the whole trick to making a bold idea look intentional.

Small Ideas You Can Repeat

I think the best makeup ideas are small ones you can repeat. A cream stick on the cheeks and lips, a glossy brown lip or a stamped wing changes your face more than a new foundation, and each takes a few minutes once you have done it twice. Keep one statement idea for weekends. Max Factor turned make-up into an everyday word a century ago, and the point is still the same: it is something you do, and you get better by trying.
