Sol de Janeiro perfume is built on a simple idea: skin that smells like a warm afternoon by the water. This edit walks through the numbered mists, the jelly balms and eau de parfum, and the Bum Bum creams that go underneath.
Sol de Janeiro Perfume: Beach-Day Sweetness, Numbered and Ready to Layer

Sol de Janeiro was born in 2015, co-founded by Heela Yang, who was inspired by Brazil's body-loving beach culture. The first product was the Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, and that tells you most of what you need to know about the brand: it began with the body, not the face, and it treats getting dressed as a whole-skin activity. The scents came next, and they are the reason a lot of people cannot walk past a Sol de Janeiro display without picking something up.
Sol de Janeiro perfume works differently from a classic French bottle. The mists are meant to be sprayed generously and often, and they come with numbers rather than fancy names. Cheiroso 7 and Cheiroso 10 are both cologne body mists made for men, and I love that they exist, because body mists are so often written for women and these are not. They suit a gym bag or a hot commute, and they are easy to spray on a shirt collar or after a swim.
Refresco Paraíso is a fresh, watery floral body mist, and it is the one to grab if you want something sheer and cool. Think of it as the opposite of a heavy perfume, a scent you can put on in the middle of the day and still enjoy at the end of it.
Hold the bottle a hand's length away and spray your chest, shoulders and the backs of your knees. Move slowly, then walk through the last of the cloud.

Jelly balms and the number 62
Then there is the number I hear most often at parties. Cheirosa 62 is named for 1962, the year the world fell for the Girl from Ipanema, and the word cheirosa means to smell incredibly delicious in Portuguese. Sol de Janeiro 62 opens on pistachio and almond, moves through heliotrope and jasmine petals, and dries down to vanilla, salted caramel and sandalwood. It is a nutty, salty dessert, and the salted caramel keeps it from feeling cloying to my nose.
The jelly perfume balm is the format I would try first if you are new to it. Cheirosa 62 Jelly Perfume Balm is a slippery gel you can dab on wrists and collarbones. It stays closer to skin than a spray, so it suits a small office and the people sitting next to you. Cheirosa 40 and Cheirosa 68 Jelly Perfume Balms are the other numbers in the same format, so you can pick a smell and use the same gesture. I keep one in my bag and reapply after washing my hands.
The SOL Cheirosa '62 Eau de Parfum is the fuller version, composed in 2020 by perfumer Jérôme Epinette. It has more projection and a longer trail than the balm. Wear it on nights when you want the vanilla to arrive before you do.
If you love the scent but hate reapplying, layer the balm on your neck and the spray on your clothes. The two textures pick up different parts of the smell.
Creams to wear underneath
A perfume that lives on skin is only as good as the skin under it. That is where the creams come in, and it is why the brand has a whole shelf of them. I put cream on damp skin after a shower and then add fragrance about ten minutes later, and everything holds far longer.
Brazilian Bum Bum Visibly Firming Refillable Body Cream with Caffeine-Rich Guaranà is the original idea, in a refillable jar. Body Badalada Lotion with Hyaluronic Acid is the lotion of the group, and my choice for summer when I want something lighter than a cream. Rosa Charmosa Dewy Body Cream with Rosewater and Crystal Peptides is the floral one, cool and glowing. Bom Dia Bright Visibly Brightening and Smoothing Body Cream with Vitamin C is a morning cream that gives skin a slightly luminous finish.
Delícia Drench Deeply Moisturizing Body Butter for Dry Skin is the richest in the group, made for heels, elbows and the winter months. Beija Flor Body Collagen-Boosting Elasti-Cream with Polypeptides and Bio-Retinol is a smoothing cream for arms and thighs, and I would keep it for evenings.
What I would skip: layering a cream and a perfume that smell very different, such as a rose cream under a salty caramel spray, and putting the richest butter on right before you dress in something fitted. Keep the scents in one family, and let the butter sink in for a few minutes first. Dry, cracked or irritated skin that does not improve is best shown to a doctor.

Building a beach shelf
A small beach shelf beats a big one. I keep one cream, one mist and one jelly balm in the same scent family, and add a fresh one for days I want a change.
Store mists and balms away from heat, and do not leave them in a hot car, since warm scents can go flat. Spray from a distance and let the mist dry before you get dressed. If you like the smell of a cream, test it on your inner arm for a day first, especially if your skin is sensitive. And when a scent starts to feel like a habit, it is doing its job.
