Cocktail attire comes down to the hour, the wedding upgrade, separates, shoes you can stand in and one statement accessory. I read every dress code guide so you do not have to, and I still overpack for two hours of standing.

The Cocktail Attire Edit: Five Lessons for the Invitation That Says Six O'Clock
Confessions of a dress code decoder
I read an invitation the way other people read a menu. Within approximately four seconds I have found the time, the venue and the three words at the bottom that decide everything, usually in small italics. I have texted friends who have never seen the invitation to ask what they think "cocktail" means. I have no shame about this.
But somewhere between black tie, semi-formal and festive, dress codes have gotten a little exhausting. We are told that cocktail is relaxed and also that showing up underdressed is a crime. We are told to be ourselves and also to match the room. The result is a closet full of pieces that are almost right. If you want to keep going, The Formal Attire Edit: Five Lessons in Black Tie, White Tie and the Rooms Between is the one I would read next.
Which brings me to Christian Dior. Vogue, quoting the Metropolitan Museum of Art, reports that he was the first to name the early evening frock a cocktail dress in the late 1940s. By then cocktail hour was becoming the norm in households, as women began to host parties between the hours of 6 P.M. and 8 P.M. So the whole category began as a name for two particular hours, and I find that oddly comforting. Cocktail attire was never really about a hem. It was about the clock.
Some of the advice I found made me feel capable. Some of it made me want to lie down. And some of it was a stylist gently saying that less is more. So, here are five lessons for the invitation that says six o'clock. I went deeper on a related idea in The Smart Casual Dress Code Edit: Five Lessons in Reading an Invitation That Says Nothing.

1. The hem is a suggestion and the hour is the rule.
I used to think a cocktail dress was a measurement. Then I read the Emily Post Institute's description of semi-formal, which is more formal than office wear and slightly less formal than a formal event, with a reminder that if the event is later than 6 in the evening you will want to err on the side of formality. Notice that the clock is doing the work, not a ruler.
The Knot says the women's version runs through jumpsuits and mini, knee-length and midi dresses, which is why this first group is mostly short and still counts. Picture her in Alex Perry's open-back draped jersey mini, black and unfussy. The Rabanne pleated turtleneck mini covers the neck so the leg can do the talking. Cult Gaia's Kera silk-crepe mini and Sportmax's Tefrite crepe mini are the sharper pair, and Bernadette's Francine velvet halterneck is the one I would hand to anyone with a December invitation. For a softer hour, Rodarte's ruffled lace-trimmed satin midi in baby pink and Aaron Esh's gathered halterneck midi in brown go longer without going stiff.
Most people typing what is cocktail attire into a search bar want a hem and a permission slip. The permission slip is the evening fabric.
What I would skip: a mini at the dressier end of the invitation, since The Knot points to a midi for the fanciest version of the code. Alaïa's light gray stretch-jersey mini is the one I would save for a party over a ceremony.
Although the best test is still sitting down in it before you commit.

2. A wedding asks for one step more than a party.
Cocktail attire wedding invitations come with a small trap. The Knot places the code between semi-formal and formal, then adds that the fanciest wedding version could call for a midi rather than a mini, and that an evening gown is not necessary. So the target is a midi, a rich fabric and nothing that touches the floor. I also put together The Semi-Formal Attire Edit: Five Lessons in Dressing Up Exactly Halfway.
Anyone asking what is cocktail attire for a wedding is really asking how much dressier than a party. Stylist Gabrielle Hurwitz, quoted by The Knot, says the fabric is often the deciding factor. That is why this group is all silk, satin, jacquard and taffeta. Rodarte's cape-effect floral-appliquéd silk-satin midi in blue is the most dramatic. Dôen's Lise lace-trimmed floral-jacquard satin midi in light blue and Destree's Celia floral-jacquard taffeta are lighter on the eyes. Dolce & Gabbana's floral silk-twill midi in orange belongs to a daytime ceremony in a garden.
For an evening wedding I would look at the darker ones. The Knot says evening cocktail attire leans toward solid-colored pieces in darker shades, and an evening hotel wedding would likely call for deeper hues and richer textures. Shushu/Tong's embellished navy crepe midi and Emilia Wickstead's burgundy Mara pleated cloqué midi fit that description, and Cara Cara's Barbara and Bernadette's Lucky are belted if you want a waist.
What I would skip: a busy print at a late wedding, however pretty. Picture her instead in navy, with the embellishment doing the talking.
Although I have never once regretted asking the couple.

3. Dressy separates count, and a good top can carry a skirt.
Some of the most useful cocktail attire for women has no dress in it. The Emily Post Institute lists dressy separates and a long dressy skirt and top among the women's semi-formal options, and Harper's Bazaar stylist Anny Choi likes two-piece sets that you can wear again as separates. That is permission to treat the closet as a mix and match set.
Start from the skirts. Alessandra Rich's purple silk-crepe de chine midi is the plainest and the easiest to build on. Saint Laurent's ruffled silk-muslin maxi in orange is long and dressy in the way the semi-formal list describes. Ulla Johnson's fringed embroidered Lark midi and Christopher John Rogers' sequin-embellished silk-crepon midi are for the room where you want to be seen from the bar.
Then the tops. Ralph Lauren Collection's Chilton satin halterneck in taupe and Khaite's Rory ruched silk satin top in pink are made for evening. Veronica Beard's Pascaline lace-trimmed satin-blend blouse in brown is a quieter option, and Max Mara's Bingo striped silk shirt in blue is the one for a skirt that already has a lot going on.
What I would skip: a basic tee on top. Vogue makes this point about trousers, saying to pair pants with a dressier silk top, and the same logic holds for a skirt.
Although the sequins and the silk are not required to meet in the middle. One of them is allowed to be quiet.

4. Pick shoes you can stand in for two hours.
Cocktail hour is mostly standing, and nobody mentions it on the invitation. Heels are not a requirement, says stylist Gabrielle Hurwitz in The Knot, but a flat should still be dressy. Vogue lists heels, leather flats and even a heeled boot for women. So the real question is not how high but how long.
Read the number in the name before the color. Gianvito Rossi's 55 leather sandals in tan are the lower heel here, and his Piper 85 suede pumps in beige are the taller one. Jude's Blade 60 leather pumps in brown sit in the middle and go with nearly every dress in the first lesson. Roger Vivier's Trompette 70 buckle-detailed pumps in burgundy are the ones I would wear with a black dress and nothing else loud. Brunello Cucinelli's 80 slingback pumps with Monili beading in bronze and Nodaleto's Dona Ruby 50 sandals in gold lean toward a cocktail dress code that expects shine.
Picture her in the Nodaleto Dona Ruby 50 crystal-embellished velvet mules in black, moving through a room with a glass in one hand. Staud's Brynn 70 snake-effect mules in dark brown do the same job in a quieter tone. The test I would run is standing in them at home for approximately twenty minutes, on a hard floor, before the night.
What I would skip: a backless mule if the evening involves a long walk from the car, because nothing is holding it on.
Although a good pair of heels does feel very different at minute ninety.

5. Choose one statement accessory, and stop there.
Harper's Bazaar quotes stylist Anny Choi saying that less is more when the invitation says cocktail, and that it is better to go minimal and dress up the look with fun accessories than to be the most overdressed person at the event. I think about that sentence more than I think about most of my own.
So one thing gets to shout. If it is earrings, The Buccellati Hawaii 18-karat yellow and white gold diamond earrings are the most formal option. The Chloé Tulip two-tone earrings and the Roxanne Assoulin ridged gold-tone earrings are the playful ones. The Completedworks gold-plated and resin earrings in black are the sculptural option for a plain dress.
If it is a bag, go small. The Khaite Olivia mini suede top-handle bag in red and the Alaïa Mina laser-cut nubuck top-handle bag in red are the loudest choices. The Alaïa Le Bouledogue mini shoulder bag in beige and the Lemaire Quiver Clip mini leather shoulder bag in brown are the calmer ones. Either one fits a phone, a lipstick and not much else, which is the point.
What I would skip: a red bag and statement earrings in the same outfit. Let one of them be the opinion and the other be the punctuation.
Although I will admit that the earrings and the bag sometimes make a very persuasive argument for being in the same room.

The room will remember one thing
The five lessons come down to roughly this. Treat the hour as the rule, one step dressier for a wedding, let separates do the work of a dress, wear shoes that can last, and give one accessory the microphone. None of it needs a stylist and none of it needs a gown.
I will still be tempted. I will still open an invitation, read the dress code, and decide that I need an entirely new outfit for two hours of standing near a bowl of olives. That is fine. The research is done, and the checklist is short.
If a stranger at the party asks where something is from, consider the evening a success.
