A semi-formal attire guide in five lessons: the hem, the fabric, the suit, the dancing shoe and the evening accessories. I read the etiquette so you can stop opening three tabs the night before.

The Semi-Formal Attire Edit: Five Lessons in Dressing Up Exactly Halfway
The invitation says semi-formal and I panic politely
Within approximately four seconds of reading an invitation that says semi-formal, I have opened three tabs, texted one friend and reread the line about what time the ceremony starts. The tabs are always the same: the hem, the fabric, the shoe. I have no shame about this.
But somewhere between cocktail, black tie optional and dressy casual, semi-formal attire has gotten a little foggy. We are told it should look polished but not overly dressy, and also that nobody should ever be underdressed. A dress code that asks you to be relaxed and impressive at once is just a riddle with a dress size. I went deeper on a related idea in The Formal Attire Edit: Five Lessons in Black Tie, White Tie and the Rooms Between.
Which brings me to the Emily Post Institute, which describes a semi-formal dress code as being more formal than what you would wear to an office, but slightly less formal than what you would wear to a formal event. Then it adds the note I think about most: if the event is later than 6 in the evening, err on the side of formality. That is the whole game, really. A dial and a clock.
Some of what I read made me relax. Some of it made me reconsider an entire closet. And some of it, mostly the part about fabric, made me want to lie down on a satin skirt. So, here are five lessons in dressing exactly halfway, from the hem to the earrings. I also put together The Christmas Outfits Edit: Five Lessons for Looking Festive Without Dressing as the Tree.

1. Semi-formal starts at the knee and stops short of the floor.
Most people googling what is semi formal attire want a number, and the closest thing to one is in The Knot's guidance: semi-formal hems should not graze the floor, and minis still read a little casual. So the sweet spot is the long middle, knee to calf. Midi territory.
Picture her walking into a late-afternoon reception in the Dries Van Noten floral silk-satin midi, or the Dries crepe version with the same garden energy. The Victoria Beckham draped satin dress in taupe is the quiet one in the room, and her navy gathered velvet Bela is the one you choose when the weather turns. The Staud Effie has beadwork on crepe, which is as much sparkle as this dress code wants, and the Bernadette Luce in dark purple crepe de chine ties it off with a belt.
The practical test: sit down in the dress in front of a mirror, then stand and walk to the door. If the hem still lands between knee and calf at both moments, you have a semi formal wedding attire answer you can stop thinking about.
What I would skip: anything with a train or a hem that pools on the floor. That is a different invitation.
Although the Pleats Please Issey Miyake plissé satin midi, in charcoal, is the one dress here that never creases, which is a kind of etiquette too.

2. Fabric does the dressing up, so let it.
The Knot puts it plainly: fabric is what differentiates semi-formal attire from cocktail attire. That sentence changed how I shop. A plain shape in a dressy cloth beats a fussy shape in an ordinary one every time.
That is why this lesson lives in silk and satin separates. Veronica Beard's Clover satin jacquard midi skirt, in brown, and Valentino Garavani's lace-trimmed silk-satin skirt in light gray both do the work without a single sequin. Chloé's tiered silk-mousseline skirt is for the daytime version, soft and a little pink. Then the tops: Chloé's lace-trimmed silk-satin tank, the Dôen Viviane top, McQueen's pussy-bow chiffon blouse and the Rixo Evanora blouse, which has the bow and the jacquard and nothing to prove.
Mix a tank with a skirt from a different house and you have the dressy separates Emily Post lists for this dress code, with room to be yourself.
What I would skip: a silk top and a silk skirt in the exact same shade from the same brand, unless you want to look like a pajama set with ambitions. Break the pairing by a shade.
Although a floral Dries Van Noten satin skirt will make even a gray blouse look like it has plans.

3. A sharp suit is a real answer, not a loophole.
Suits for women are right there in the guidance. The Knot says that for suiting, matching pieces are not required, and that going jacket-free is completely appropriate. So a semi formal dress code is not a polite way of saying dress. If you want to keep going, Semi Formal Attire Women: Max Beerbohm's Lounge Suit Lesson is the one I would read next.
In our fashion dreams she is wearing the Jacquemus belted wool-crepe blazer over the Brunello Cucinelli silk-satin wide-leg pants, hair pulled back, going straight to dinner. Or the Lisa Yang double-faced wool and cashmere-blend blazer, gray, with the Carolina Herrera pleated green trousers that make a blazer look like a decision. For evening, Etro's green velvet straight-leg pants are the move, with the black Lisa Yang jacket on top. La Ligne's satin wide-leg pants in taupe and the Another Tomorrow wool blazer in brown give you a softer, warmer pair.
The practical test: take the jacket off and look at the pants alone. If they would still pass at dinner, the outfit has a backup plan.
What I would skip: a suit in a fabric that reads office, like a flat gray that has seen too many Mondays.
Although velvet, I think, is allowed to do whatever it likes after dark.

4. Choose the shoe that can survive the dance floor.
The Knot suggests sensible block-heel sandals over embellished, sky-high stilettos to tone down a fancier outfit, and I read that as permission to be practical. Heels can be elegant and still have a plan for the third song.
The Aeyde Cari 35 is the low one, a gray leather pump for the person who is going to be on her feet from the first toast to the last. The Aquazzura Dream Girl 65 mules are a lower heel in black mesh, and The Row's Liisa Kitten pump keeps the heel kitten-small in white. Victoria Beckham's Maverick 80 and Aquazzura's Purist 85 in camel suede are the classic pumps for a more grown-up evening, while Gianvito Rossi's 70 Mary Janes have a strap to keep the shoe where it belongs. Aeyde's Carla slingbacks bring a snake print to the room.
The practical test: stand in them for ten minutes in the kitchen while you do something unrelated. If you start looking for a chair, take the number down a size.
What I would skip: the Amina Muaddi Holli 95 on a night with no seating plan. It is a gorgeous lace pump and a lot of heel.
Although I have never once regretted bringing a second pair in a tote.

5. After dark, let the accessories do the talking.
Emily Post asks for more formality after 6 in the evening, and the quickest way to get there is not the dress. It is the clutch and the earrings. The Knot says jewelry can lift something on the casual side, which is the entire argument for this lesson.
Pick one of the small bags and keep the rest simple. Bottega Veneta's Intrecciato suede clutch in gray is woven and soft, the Nili Lotan Jerry suede clutch in navy is sleek, Proenza Schouler's Amory is a clean black leather shape, and the Liffner belted croc-effect clutch in burgundy is the one that gets compliments at the coat check. Then earrings: Jennifer Behr's Rafferty with carnelian and jasper, Le Sundial's onyx and mother-of-pearl Nives, Julietta's Lucia in the same dark pairing, and the malachite Sasa from Paola Sighinolfi.
The practical test: wear one statement piece, either the bag or the earrings, and let the other one disappear. The Knot notes that statement accessories are less common at this level, and anyone searching semi formal attire women will find the same quiet advice, so one is plenty.
What I would skip: a bag that does not close, if there is a buffet involved.
Although I will admit a malachite earring is a very good conversation starter near a bar.

The dress code you can wear to almost anything
Here is what the five lessons add up to. Semi-formal attire is less a uniform than a sentence with a short clause at the end: dress up a little, and then a little more once the sun goes down.
I will still panic when the next invitation arrives. I will still open the same three tabs. The difference is that I now know the hem, the cloth and the shoe are the answer, and the earrings are the part I can change at the last minute.
If the invitation just says semi-formal, put on the satin, check the clock and go. Somebody will be wearing sneakers anyway, and you will have a clutch.
