Heavy gold, odd pearls and stones the color of turning leaves.
The Fall Jewelry Box

What Changes in the Fall
Summer jewelry is small, shiny and mostly lost on a beach towel. Fall jewelry has more weight to it.
I want gold you can feel, pearls that are not perfectly round, and stones in the same browns and reds as the trees outside. Here is what is in my jewelry box this season, split into five moods.

Heavy Gold
Chunky gold earrings are the fastest way to look put together with wet hair and a turtleneck. Go for domes, knots and thick hoops with some movement in them. One pair worn every day beats a drawer of tiny studs.

Odd Pearls
The pearls I like are lumpy, baroque and a little strange. They look better with a sweater than with a cocktail dress, which is exactly the point. Wear one pearl piece with your gold instead of saving it for a wedding.

Stones the Color of Leaves
This is my favorite section. Tiger's eye, carnelian, garnet, citrine and malachite are the colors of a walk in October. They warm up camel, grey and black, and they make plain knitwear look considered.

The Cuff
A cuff worn over a sleeve is my favorite fall jewelry trick. Wood, resin and hammered gold all work. Wear one big one on its own, or stack two in different materials if you are feeling brave.

Signets and Rings
Rings are the jewelry you see all day, because they are on your hands. I like a signet with some weight, one colored stone and a gold dome that catches the light while you type.

Where I'd Start
Start with one heavy gold pair and one stone. Everything else is dessert.
