The Jolie Filtered Showerhead and What It Actually Filters

The Jolie filtered showerhead uses a copper-zinc and calcium filter to cut chlorine and some heavy metals from shower water. Here it is with three other filters and the in-shower hair and body care I would pair with it.

Ryan Babenzien had already founded the sneaker brand Greats, which was sold in 2019, when he started looking for a product with no sizes, one that fit a daily routine and appealed to vanity. His own dry skin pointed him to the shower, and in December 2021 he and Arjan Singh launched Jolie. The Jolie filtered showerhead pairs a copper-zinc alloy called KDF-55 with calcium sulfite to target chlorine and heavy metals, and Jolie says third-party lab testing found it removed more than 66 percent of free chlorine over 10,000 gallons. The filter should be changed every three months, which is why it is sold with a subscription. Canopy, which developed its devices with a cosmetic dermatologist and started with a bedside humidifier, makes a fixed and a handheld version with a three-stage filter that swaps out without tools. HigherDOSE makes a red light shower filter. None of these soften hard water the way a whole-house system does, so think of them as a way to cut chlorine rather than a fix for everything.

Hair care for the new water

Cleaner water makes the rest of your routine easier to judge. goop's Shinebath mask and amino acid shampoo come from the line Gwyneth Paltrow started after a member of her team taught her about clean formulas. Innersense was founded in 2006 by two hairstylists, Greg and Joanne Starkman, who began reading ingredient labels after their daughter's diagnosis, and Clarity is one of its hairbaths, as the brand calls its shampoos. Dr. Groot, from a South Korean company focused on the scalp and roots, makes an in-shower treatment that hydrates the scalp. If you are worried about thinning, see a dermatologist rather than relying on any shampoo.

Body care in the shower, and the skip

The last row works while the water runs. Hanni, founded by Leslie Tessler after a long stay in Argentina made her notice how she had neglected her body care, makes Splash Salve, a conditioning mask for the body. Cyklar, from the actress Claudia Sulewski, makes an in-shower oil balm with ceramides that smells of vanilla, bergamot and tonka. Sol de Janeiro's shower oil is made for very dry skin, and Nécessaire's exfoliant bar treats rough, bumpy skin, from the brand named for the question of whether something is necessary. What I would skip is a long, hot shower, filter or not. Heat dries skin faster than anything in the water, so keep it warm and short.

Setting it up

Most filtered showerheads screw on by hand in a few minutes, with plumber's tape on the thread. Run the water for a minute before your first shower to flush the new filter. Mark the change date on your calendar. Give it a month before you judge your skin and hair. If nothing has changed by then, your water was probably fine to begin with.
