The New Rules of Tenniscore

Pleated skirts, knit polos and polished sneakers for court-to-street dressing

The new rules of tenniscore: court sneakers, pleated skirts, knit polos, cardigans and accessories from Net-A-Porter, Mytheresa and SSENSE.

The new rules of tenniscore

Tenniscore has grown up. The pleated skirt and the polo are still there, but now they are worn with cashmere, good leather and shoes that look as good at lunch as on the court. This edit pulls from Net-A-Porter, Mytheresa and SSENSE to build the look from the ground up.

Start with the shoe. On's Roger made with Wimbledon and its Cloud 6, adidas Originals' Handball Spezial and Gazelle Lo Pro, Nike's Cortez and Amiri's Stars Court Low are the sporty ones, while Jacquemus' Tennis sneakers and Gucci's Screener are the more polished pairs.

Tennis skirt and sneaker outfits from court to street

Pleated skirts and tennis dresses

The pleated skirt is the centre of the look. Choose one that moves when you do and sits at the right length with a crisp white sneaker.

Polo Ralph Lauren's Wimbledon pleated skirt and minidress are the heritage choice, with adidas by Stella McCartney's technical tennis skirt, Nike's pleated jersey skirt and On's Court mini skirt as the performance options. Lululemon's Roland Garros skirt, Sporty & Rich's striped tennis skirt and On's Court mini dress finish the group.

Polo knits and the new classics

The polo has been rewritten in cashmere and wool. A knit one reads as sporty and refined at once, and it works under a coat or on its own.

Alémais' Valentina polo, Auralee's mohair polo sweater and Almada's Kaia cashmere polo sweater lead the group. Lisa Yang's Katriel, Jardin des Orangers' wool and cashmere polo, Róhe's argyle polo, Ssstein's Skipper and Norba's cotton polo sweater give you a range of weights and colours.

Cardigans, vests and warm-up layers

Between warm-up and the walk home, you need a layer. Cardigans and vests in Fair Isle, argyle or plain cashmere are the traditional answer, and they still look right today.

Nili Lotan's Myrdin Fair Isle vest, Dôen's Hue Fair Isle cardigan and Clara cashmere cardigan, Auralee's Tekla cardigan and Acne Studios' fitted yak wool cardigan are the knit options. Ganni's argyle cardigan adds pattern, with Varley's Bartley quilted jacket and The Upside's Tribute bomber for sportier days.

Visors, sunglasses and the bag for your racquet

The accessories complete the look, a visor or cap to shade your eyes, good sunglasses and a tote large enough for a racquet and a change of clothes.

Eugenia Kim's Trixie visor, Frame's Sotheby's cap and Gigi Burris' Lauren flat cap handle the head. Bottega Veneta's Intrecciato shield and Celine's tortoiseshell sunglasses cut the glare, and The Row's N/S Park tote, Loewe's Puzzle Fold tote and Jacquemus' Le Spiaggia Coeur tote carry everything.

Where to begin

Start with a pleated skirt and a sneaker you love, then add a knit polo and a cardigan. The rest is a matter of taste.
